Hi,
I know that the rate of unemployment in Reno is through the roof but how difficult is it to find a minimum wage job? I may be attending school in Reno and was concerned about the possibility of finding work there. Does anyone have any personal experience with this? I am from California where the situation here is bad, but I can see the unemployment rate is higher over in Reno. Thanks for any answers.
Cloister

Let me put it this way. I moved to Reno from Phoenix (which I never had a problem getting a job) in March of 2006. I could not find any job at all so I was forced to leave. I went from Reno to Vegas and immediately found a job. This was BEFORE the recession hit. I would not recommend going there for work.

if your looking at min wage and a fast food or other similar capacity you will get something but, don't expect a 40 hr week most are only hiring less then 20 hrs . They make it look like they are hiring a lot of people but then you realize that all those employees are working p/t. Which saves the company with providing other benefits and perks that only FT employees would be entitled to /

I think the Hr rate here is low but on the other hand your overhead is lower, NO STATE INCOME TAX. for one thing, also anywhere the involves casino work is on the low side, I lived in vegas had friends that worked and casino made 8bucks hr but after tips they brought in 60 000 - 70 000 a year. I know of two NEW casinos in the carson City area one is built and as of nov 5 2010 the land is just being cleared, its 300 room, these guy dont put in 300 room casino without something at the end of it. Give how tight times are thats a very good sign. I would give it one more year and this place will be back up and running, GET A TRADE, I do alarms and I know I'll be in high demand, unemployment is high now but so are many places, Riverside Ca is a good example, but there the population is 4million so it = more people looking for that same job, more resume to go through, more chance for you not to get the job, Short term things are tight in Reno, longterm things look very good. Also Reno as more industry then lets say Vegas, so the variety of jobs are greater.

For the last two years it's been very tough. My wife just finally got a job this past month and she was looking every day for close to two years, everything from taco bell to sales/marketing and no job. I hate to sound overdramatic but I don't feel like I am when I say that Reno is an economic wasteland right now. Las Vegas, from what I hear from friends, isn't doing much better.
