Small family with 18 m/o child relocating to Reno this summer for a position at the VA hospital on Locust St. We are looking at daycare and neighborhoods that would be within a reasonable commute with a M-F, 8am-4pm work schedule. I've been browsing this forum and found some excellent information, but would love some specific advice.

We're looking at renting a home in a nice area and so far considering the daycare center at UNR. Sparks seems reasonable, so does South Reno, but what would the commute be like? I'm not afraid of a little traffic, but with dropping off the little one at daycare and then going to the VA, I'd like to position our family to make that as easy as possible. Access to playgrounds, parks and shopping would be a big plus too.

Thanks!

You will find there are plenty of areas within a reasonable distance to either the VA or UNR --- Reno is a compact community and (regardless of some opinions) traffic is relatively mild.

I recommend considering the Northwest for your rental...you could drop your child off at UNR and continue down Virginia to the VA Hospital (you will find some convenient short cuts as you discover you route..there are plenty). The hours you are looking at are going to keep you out of some of the heaviest traffic (Virginia gets really busy around 4:45-5:30 p.m.)

Welcome to Reno!! Let me know if you have any other questions : )

Thank you for your advice! I've been looking at rentals in the NW and there seem to be a reasonable supply of good places within our means. I had also seen a couple homes temptingly within walking distance of the VA (we have one car), but am a little weary of the area.

Default Daycare...

I know the walking distance is tempting; however, you are likely to prefer the NW....you will find the area is very convenient as far as commuting is concerned....

Would love to help acquaint you with the area when you are here...coffee and a tour one Saturday or Sunday : ) Many people do not realize how many great things there are to do....I have a ten cent tour I provide to newcomers and offer to you!

Again, WELCOME!
