Are there any rural areas that are in the Reno area? I would like to buy a home up there but I am not interested in being in a track home with an HOA. I don't want to be in a small town...just an offshoot area near the city.

Basically I want the rural feel AND the short drive to the city. Does this exist?

Check out Cold Springs, Lemmon Valley or Golden Valley north of Reno along Hwy 395.

I don't understand - you're looking for rural areas but no small towns within a short drive of Reno??

Reno is SURROUNDED by rural areas. Yes, many have new developments w HOA's, but there's also a lot of independent lots, ranches, places w a lot of acres. If you find a house with more than an acre, it's most likely not a new development. You just have to look. Back in the day, there were hardly new developments in the rural areas outside of Reno, so there are still many older houses out there. Only recently during the building boom did new developments go up everywhere.

But as an aside, many rural areas just outside the city, what we refer to as the North Valleys are poor rural areas with trailers, so just be aware of that, like Sun Valley. You need to go a little further out to where the farmers and ranchers used to live. Maybe look at Washoe Valley or Virginia City Highlands south of Reno.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! You can live in Minden, Gardnerville, Fallon, Fernley or consider Verdi. You can find some great opportunities and be within one hour (even as close as twenty mintues).
