Question Why does the city-data wind graph show Reno as being LESS windy than the U.S. on average?

I keep seeing threads about Reno's wind that don't seem to fit the data on this site (see image). I don't doubt that it's windy in parts of Reno, but I've been there dozens of times and don't recall wind being unusual in the downtown area within a 4 or 5 mile radius. Maybe I just had good luck? Visits have been at random times of the year in all seasons. I remember a lot of wind at Pyramid Lake, though, after a calm morning.

Is there something misleading about the city-data wind chart, like winds being gusty, intermittent, or geographically isolated, leading to an average speed that doesn't reflect the worst of it?

Why is it so windy in Reno? The mountain topography aspect makes sense, so what's up with the city-data chart showing less wind than the U.S. average? If you find Reno's wind to be a hassle, please state what part of town you live in.

I lived on campus at UNR this year, and it definitely got VERY windy at times. However, just day to day it wasn't a problem.

I dont think its any more windy than any other places Ive lived.(Bay area, South Tx..very windy, Lousiana and now central Florida) HOWEVER...if you are flying in and out of Reno, you will definitely experience a lot of crosswinds, a lot of light turbulence...occasionally moderate, and occasional wind shear due to the terrain. I hate flying into and out of Reno
