mod cut:

As far as your original post, hopefully someone local can offer advice. Personally I wouldn't move without a job already lined up, the job market is really tight as I understand it....

Default part time job

Reno is one of the worst victims of the Great Recession. It took my friend with a bachelor's degree four months of searching hard to find a part time job at a Subway. Since the real estate bust sliced and diced us up so badly here, and we overexpanded so much in the 90s and 2000s, when the bust hit we realized serious downturn and that was double whammy'd by a gradual loss in gambling revenue as casinos have popped up in other states in the past 10 years, drawing alot of revenue away. Tahoe's economy looks a little better than ours especially since they have the world class ski resorts, but thats a trecherous commute and not worth if for a part time job unless you live up there and it SNOWS more than almost ANYWHERE in the country up there. Unemployment is steeply higher here than the national average, and is at Great Depression levels though not as bad as Vegas or some rural counties like Lyon County. Unless you have something lined up or a real reason to come here, Jobs is currently not a strengh of our otherwise beautiful humble metro area.

You willl find a VERY hard time. Most employers will hire people who have lived in reno longer then someone just moving here. because, the recession is so bad they want to help locals.

Perhaps also, someone living there is possibly more likely to continue to live there. Nobody wants to train someone just to have them move away later.

Yes, unfortunately, they actually advertise that way, if not in those exact words then it's implied.

These threads give me major headaches, my wife and I will be moving to Reno as soon as we can and I will have to get a job also. Last night, I was listening to your president (I am not a US Citizen, working on permanent residency) and it looks like legal immigrants will have an even harder time finding jobs if his plan gets through both houses.

Historically, I have always found a job very easily but it sure sounds like it will be much more challenging this time. I hope I can prove all of you wrong :-)

Yep. Great assessment. Reno was always my favorite place to gamble in the early 90s---always better than Vegas. Reno needs to capitalize on the anti-business environment in CA, and lure some jobs away from them. Although, I spent 2009 in Summerlin, and was not impressed with the business environment there.

I doubt you will. Now that you tell us that you are not a US Citzen...lol you have noooooooo idea what you are in for........ IN NV.. i can tell you this much employers one are hiring like i said long time residents more so then someone who just transplanted in Reno and second Americans will be considered first even if that person has less skills then you.

You will have a lot of local teens as your competition for part time work. They are much sort after then older people since several major companies have programs at the local HS and Colleges to recruit them for pt work.

Have you started looking for work? What type of work are you looking for? How much are you looking to be paid? BTW most pt work is minimum wage.

You're in for one hell of a big surprise when you start looking for a job in Reno. Your plan is not very wise. If you REALLY need a job in order to make it in RENO you should find a job FIRST before moving here.

I probably shouldn't have replied in this topic, cause I'm not after a part time job but I would be willing to settle for it as a short term solution. I am 30 years old, so eventhough I will have a disadvantage to college graduates it should not be impossible to overcome.

Even if I don't get a job, we can still stay afloat fairly comfortably on my wife's income so that's not a problem.

My plan might not be very wise from a job perspective but there are other reasons why moving from Vegas to Reno makes a lot of sense.

I am looking for a job where I can work my way up, I have experience in Natural Gas for a Multinational Company in Europe which may be useful. I don't really care how much I'm paid in the beginning, I just want potential.

Now let's try to prove you wrong :-)
