I am reading the forums with interest as my husband and I are thinking about relocating to Reno. We were just there in July, met with a great agent and I can maybe answer some of your questions. I was told that currently, 70% of the homes on the market are short sales or foreclosures. Short sales are a pain and they can take months and months and the sale may never go through. He encouraged us to avoid those listings.
I did see a Whole Foods Market and a Trader Joe's market in Reno. I'm told there are Farmer's markets.
I'm not sure about utilities, but overall, moving from California, and most likely Washington, Reno's cost of living will be less than we are used to.
Employment is a problem but this seems to be true anywhere these days.
We are thinking of this as a retirement move.
Good Luck.

Interesting about the short sales and I have read that.

Please be advised that our Lack of jobs is the worst in the nation and has been for sometime

As per Trader Joes...LOL I dont consider that healthy food all it is, is major brands that sell to TJ and private label there mrerch and charge more. Like designer Jeans.

You can find more healthy and lower priced food in Walmart then TJ. You can also find more locally grown goods in Walmart and Raleys, Savemart Winco . Trader joes most of their pakaged food and produce comes from 3rd world countries.

I think they have been covered pretty well --- we do have a Whole Foods too. If you are looking for fresh/organic produce, most of the grocery stores in town offer it.

There are Farmers Markets on just about every day of the week (through the fall), they rotate to various locations in town (parking lots with vendors selling their fresh produce).

The cost of living here is reasonable and I do think you will be pleased with the bottom line matches using the resources as shared by another poster.

I really like the water straight from the tap ---

Keep the questions coming, that is what we are here for : )

I love Pitt, but do know the cost of living is tough..ha! My kids live in Manhattan (SoHo) and share some of the costs for grocery items....it always amazes me : )

I believe you are getting bad information from the agent. Nevada law allows the bank 90 days to respond to offers. Most of the horror stories that I'm aware of are related to banks taking 6+ months to respond to offers. I'm pretty sure the penalties for exceeding 90 days are pretty stiff as well.

Hopefully one of the resident RE agents will chime in here.
