What's it like to live in the higher elevation? (Reno: living, health)

The biggest difference you will find in this area is that we are high desert and WATER, WATER, WATER is your friend.

It helps to keep your skin from drying out (lots of lotion is needed too) and with the change in altitude.

If you go on a hike, the altitude is much higher and requires some getting accustomed to.

Some people like to keep humidifiers on hand to help with the dryness and it seems to help with any acclimation to altitude.

It will take a little bit to get accustomed to the altitude but not long; and then you will be living day to day as normal.

I dont see much of a difference I lived in many cities around the world and its all the same. Maybe if you have health issues it maybe a problem.

There's not much difference between 1100ft and 4000ft elevation. The air doesn't get "thin" at that altitude and you wouldn't notice the difference. Reno has low humidity so 90 degree summer days are tolerable. It does get cold during the winter with snow, but the snow is usually not that bad (which is why it's a desert).

Thank you for the elevation answers. I have also lived in Phoenix, so I'm familiar with desert, I wasn't certain about altitude.

You will not even notice 4000 feet. It usually takes 6000 feet before you can tell the difference. 10,000 feet will really give you notice. In many ways, we are like Phoenix, including it cooling down quite a bit after the sun goes down.

To be honest, Reno is actually 4400-5300 feet depending on what part of town you live in and driving in and out of other areas you will sometimes find that go much higher than that. As others have said still it isnt that bad though you might feel it when you get above 5000 feet in the form of slightly thinner air, but air doesnt really start to thin up on you or affect most people until you're above 6000 feet or more and even then, most can get used to it in short order

If you go east or northeast 1/2 to 1 hour or so from town toward Fallon, Fernley or Pyramid lake then you will end up going down to or below 4000 feet...
