Question Leaving Reno

I would like to know where people are moving to when they leave the Reno area?

i am leaving Reno to move to Austin, Nv after have lived here for 15 months. Nothing wrong with Reno. I am on a fixed income (100% va disability) and can't afford to buy a house here. Reno was only meant to be temp, as I came here to be closer to my mom during several medical operations.

Becky, how do you plan to fill your days out in Austin? I know that I would spend my time wandering in the various wilderness areas, but that is me, what do you plan to do?

Also in answer to the original post. While I do not live in Reno, my life is connected to Reno having worked there the past twenty years. We are moving to the Central Coast, never hot, never cold. I can hike, ride my horse, sail my various sailboats, bicycle, motorcycle year round. Also, having retired from teaching in Reno I will manage the family farm operations on the coast.

However we will keep our land in Kingston and spend a month or so a year there.

And Becky, perhaps you could give me some advice. One stormy Atlantic night while in the US Navy, we had 20 depth charges, 300 lbs of high explosive lashed to the afterdeck as were painting the rack they were normally stored in. The lashings broke, and we had 20 depth charges crashing around on the deck. If one had detonated the rest would have and we would have gone down. So we went out, bulldogged them other crew members grabbed them and dragged them to me. I lifted most of the 20 300 lbs depth charges three feet off the ground into their rack. My back has troubled me ever since, but being a young man I sought no medical assistance at the time.

Any chance I could get some VA help/partial disability from them? I live in constant pain and have tried everything from drugs to therapy.

(I still do active stuff, since the pain is always there, I figure I may as well)

Yes Guide, that is exactly what i plan on doing, wandering around the wilderness.
I have been using the va facilities for over 23 yrs now. Reno has a very fine va hospital. U can go to Making Government User-friendly - Government Information to see if u are elegible. u may find that u are elegible for medical services and not for compensation. u can apply online. I have come across many vets who think that there are not elegible for care, but they are. Let me know what u find out.

Thanks, I am registered with the VA, and will use them for medical now that I am retired, I don't know how to go about claiming a disability. My buddy Bill got a snazzy earing aid, he was an artillery officer in Vietnam.

You might like looking over my website, even though parts are missing; index.html

well, that is so kewl Guide. am i gonna need a gun up in austin while i do this hiking/exploring thing? the only experience i have with hiking is what i did in army basic training, and that was 25 years ago! lol. i saved the link to my favs and i will read what u have to say.
as for filing....go to the regional office on terminal way in reno. some small towns will have a va rep who visits on a reg. basis. maybe u have one up there? u just say u would like to file for disability....as i recall it is just one form. in one block u write what it is your disability is. they will contact u later. if u belong to a service organization (amvets, dav, vet of foreign wars, etc) it is good to get into contact with them. i think the va form even asks if u are a member of any service organization. if so, they will send a copy of the form to them and u will be hearing from them as well. i have had to fight for service connected disabilites along the years. the dav attorneys have helped. just remember, it is a long process and even longer with the war on terror going on and many new vets being added to the system.

You won't need a gun for four legged predators, you might have to shoot a man or two, but they probably needed shooting I wander all over the place unarmed, but I am a big tall man.

We carry a gun when we have livestock, if they get injured and you don't have a gun you would have to beat them over the head with a rock.

First hike, South Twin River down by Carvers, lovely riparian jungle back in there.

Also visit Belmont, you will like it much.

Thanks for the VA stuff. Terminal way office is different than the hospital? I never joined any Veterans organization, I was so pissed after I got out (one of those Vietnam Veteran guys) I wanted nothing more to do with the military in any way, it took me over thirty years to even walk into a VA hospital.
