Hello,
I am a single mom and currently live near Fresno CA. Right now I am unemployed and my kids and I are staying with my parents for the time being. Jobs are few and far between. It sucks here and I want to get out but most of CA is too expensive for me to consider, so I am looking into the Reno/Sparks area.
I looked on craigslist and found a lot of job openings compared to here. I am a nurses aide and could work at a senior home but would prefer to work in a hospital as a clerk, janitor or food service etc... Eventually I would like to attend the University too. So how hard is it to find a job in Reno? Has the recession hit there as hard as here in CA? Also, it looks like housing is much less expensive, am I just looking in the wrong areas or is it possible to rent for $700 or so a month?
What is the daycare situation like? Is it possible to get state funding without being on a waitlist for ages?
I have lived in the bay area and loved it since I am quite crunchy and green but everything is too expensive and left when I had kids. Is Reno green and eco-friendly or would I be the odd vegan out?
Any other single moms with information on the area would be awesome for sharing any information!

Why do you think Nevada taxpayers should feel obligated to subsidize your living expenses?

I don't think anyone should subsidize my living expenses. That is why I was looking for jobs on craigslist there. It seems like there are a lot more opportunities in Reno than here. I am not going to apply for welfare or food stamps or what have you. I just want to get my kids into daycare so I can work and pay my taxes just like you

I am planning on getting funding for daycare from Help Paying for Child Care once I get a job offer. I was hoping someone knew what the wait time was like so I could tell prospective employees when I could begin to work. By the way I am a nursing assistant and love caring for long term care residents on state medical plans just as much as those on private insurance just in case you were wondering...
