Default Real Deal on Carson and surrounding area?

I'd like to hear the real insider scoop on the Carson City area. It seems my husband will be transfered up there for work later this year from Las Vegas. I lived in Reno for a year while attending UNR and went to Carson a couple times myself for work, but that's the end of my experience with the area. Our plan is to rent for 6 months to a year and then purchase a house. Basically what I'm looking for is what areas are ghetto, middle class, upper classs, etc. How are Dayton, Minden, Washoe Valley, etc? We'll be up there later in the year to check things out for ourselves of course, but I'd like a preview of what to expect.
Thanks!!!

Carson City is mainly a retirement town and does not have a ghetto area. It is very safe area has some awesome mom and pop restaurants and bars and loads of shopping so you will not have to venture into reno for. Minden / Gardnerville are a few miles south you will end up having to come to Carson for your shopping and entertainment since it's mostly a bedroom community. Dayton has very little to offer. Washoe Valley recently had a very bad fire. It is between Carson and Reno you will have to venture to either or for shopping etc.

Thanks Tahoe Girl! Carson City does look like the place to be although I notice housing prices are a little higher there than in some of ther other areas.

I live in Carson and I disagree with the 'no ghetto areas'. The main area of town to avoid is the east side. The houses are very poorly taken care of, garbage everywhere and you can hear the occasional gunshot every once in a while. The west side is much better, crime wise, but pricey. There are alot of what my husband calls 'twitchers' that walk the streets all over town at all hours. Twitchers being the meth heads, they are easy to point out. They are contantly looking everywhere at once and jittery as if they are being chased or followed. You have to keep your car doors locked at all times, even if you get out of it for just a sec, people will pass your car and pull the handle to see if its open. I would suggest buying a gun. After living here I felt buying a gun was a necessity and we live on the west side. The people here are nice though, some can be rude [mod cut-- reference to deleted post] but most ok. Learn to speak spanish otherwise you may not find a decent job or be able to communicate with 70% of the city. There really aren't that many retirees here, more middle aged and younger. There are indeed many mom and pop restaurants, which is awesome. If your looking to buy a house I would suggest checking out Dayton. The area is indeed drab and slow without much to do but the crime is lower, the area is much safer and the houses there are much cheaper than in Carson. You get a large piece of property with a nice house and Carson is only a 15 min drive away. There are a few Casinos, a Smiths store and many restaurants. I also heard that a Walmart is supposed to be coming up soon in Dayton as well. Gardnerville/Minden has a lower crime and lots of green grass and trees but is super expensive. Washoe Valley just had a huge fire so most of the valley is burned. I know my post makes carson sound bad but you wanted the 'real insider scoop' and I hope i have answered most of your questions. My family is planning on moving out of Carson soon, in fact just yesterday I had most of my laundry stolen from an outdoor clothes line (while i was home) and my yard is fenced...good luck with your move and I hope all works out for you and your family!

Thank you, don't worry, we are already well armed And we speak resturant Spanish so I'm not too concerned about that.
The thing about Dayton I am concerned about is that it appears half empty with all the houses up for sale. There are areas like that here in Vegas were you have squatters or kids breaking into foreclosed houses. Is that an issue in Dayton?
Another question... if I did find a place in the Washoe Valley that wasn't burnt down how would the drive be into Carson in the winter? I know this winter was weird with the lack of snow, but normally how is that drive?
Sorry about your laundry... that is weird.

The drive from Washoe Valley to carson is good except when its windy. It can get super windy along one open section of the highway. The wind actually toppled a semi trailer over one year...In the winter its not that bad, its mostly a straight drive, no hills except the one coming into and going out of carson but its kept pretty well cleared of snow.
I have personally viewed most of the houses in Dayton and I can honestly say I have not seen any squatters or damages such as break-ins or broken windows on any of the houses. I also have friends who live out there, right off of 6 mile canyon, and they have mentioned several times how quiet it is and have not had any problems with theft or vandalism.
Heres that video of the semi that got blown over...Im not showing to scare you, just to show how wild the winds get on that stretch of highway.

I want you to back up all the negative remarks you made about Carson City with RECENT links to photos showing garbage, twittchers and recnet crime reports...... there is crime in EVERY CITY and Carson is VERY CLEAN & VERY SAFE There is no Ghetto Area what so ever. Meth is a problem ALL OVER NV. We have a latin community and they live ALL OVER the USA. Speaking spanish is a plus ALL OVER THE USA. as for putting down the West side of Carson there are homes being sold there for half a mill and more...... People ALL OVER the world lock their car doors. You really exagerated your post about CC I NEVER EVER in my six years have I had a bad eperience. I drive a very expensive car and NEVER have I had a issue with someone trying to break into it. I see more meth addicts in downtown reno then i have seen in CC.

i can deal with a person who has negative things to say but [mod cut-- rude] bashing a town is just wrong unless the information is current and true. Ken Furlong has done so much for ALL Of Carson City. [mod cut-- rude]

Ren2337 _ Post your proof please Photos of the police, The seedy side of CC the Bad Crime Rate etc etc......Yes there is Crime in CC like any other city . There was ONE stick up at the AmPm gas station this year..... ONE and CC is not the only city that has had ONE stick up at a gas station in their hood. There are area's in better locations that have had more then ONE stick up. .[mod cut-- rude, personal, off topic]
I will say this once more I can deal if a person or persons have information that is negative but I will not tolerate false information.
