Advice on where to live near my new job in reno (Las Vegas: for sale, real estate market)

Hello. I currently live in cameron Park, CA. I may be moving to Reno shortly once a job offer comes through. I would be working on E. Plumb Street. I would like to live close to work, but the neighborhood that is right around the office is a bit rough. Can someone recommend an area that is nice, quiet, and safe to live in, and still close to where I would be working? I may rent at first, or I may buy a home or town home right away. Thanks!

My advise to you would be to look in the old south west area, especially if you are going to be new to the city. It's such a pretty area with huge trees and beautiful architecture and one of the most sought out places to live in Reno. AND, it would only take you 10-15 minutes to get to work on Plumb taking surface streets, give or take the cross streets your office is on! I live in old south west, and I am originally from Las Vegas, and I love it there. Very safe and quiet, and the older houses are so cute; many of them being redone and gorgeous! Also, there are so many restaurants, bars, and a quick walk/bike ride to the beautiful Truckee river nearby where people (especially in the summer time) all flock to to sunbathe and attend many of the festivals and events that go on in downtown Reno. California street would be a good area to base your move off of, as again its really close to where you would be working. The housing market in Reno is definitely great for buyers right now, so if you can afford it or could qualify for a loan, I would for sure do it! Depending on how much money you would want to spend on a house, there are several areas near Plumb that you could look into besides old south west. Lakeridge is one of the premier areas near Plumb (there is a private gated community in addition to the area in general), and you could find a house in any price range there as they have so many different types of homes to offer. The main road is Ridgeview (outside of the gated community) where its just house after house, and a very safe and quiet neighborhood as well. So yea, look into old south west or Lakeridge area- I think you will be impressed with both depending on your personal preferences! I'm connected to many real estate agents and loan officers here in Reno, and I would be glad to send you their way! I'm not a Reno native, and I love it here! Most people I know from out of town love it here too! Not to mention how amazing summers are here, you would be moving at the PERFECT time! Cheers!

I can't think of any place near Plumb that is "rough". Grove Street is somewhat rough and that's near Plumb. There's a tiny patch just north of Plumb between Virginia and Kietzke that's somewhat rough. It's all relative I guess. South Central LA and the Bronx are rough. There's plenty of nice small 1940's 1950's homes just north of Plumb east of Virginia. West of Virginia tends to be nicer than east. Midtown is nice which is just south of downtown and north of Plumb. The old Southwest is nice except avoid Robinhood and the big apts there behind the Peppermill Casino. Downtown has cheap condo's for sale. Avoid the $35K condo's where the building is going bankrupt. You can find $100K - $150K 1 bed-room condo's. And 'close' in Reno means anything within the McCarran Loop which is a 15 minute drive. Depends if you want outdoors serenity or street life. For outdoors serenity just go further south to South Reno south of McCarran. Plenty of cheap rentals, house rentals, apts in Reno bc of the bad real estate market. Welcome to Reno! We're hipsterific! Are you looking for an area thats similar to Cameron Park? If so I would look into Hidden Valley or some areas in South Reno.

Do NOT move to Sun Valley, or Montello/Sutro area. You would probably be happy near the Sparks Marina (not to far from E.Plumb Lane) Hidden Valley is nice but rents are high 15-1800, month. Golden Valley is about 12 miles but nice, rents are better about 1K to 1450$. You might want to just take a day to drive around to check things out for yourself. There is good and bad in every neighbor hood. But personally I'd move by the Marina. It's calming to walk around the Marina. Takes about 1 hour to walk it. Close to a lot of shops, food, movies, etc. Hidden Valley is NOT like Cameron Park. Cameron Park is very nice. If you want C.P. living go to Caughlin Ranch area. It's South West Reno. The views are stunning, very nice neighborhood. Caughlin Ranch is less than 8 miles from Plumb Lane. Hope this helps.....

looking at trulia and craigs list, there is a relative scarcity of cheap rental homes, rental apartments, etc. compared to what I would expect for a foreclosure market of nearly 500,000

do reno landlords have a tendency to not use these services, or, do these properties go fast, since everyone is renting / buying them since they are great bargains ?

also what is defined as SW RENO - are you referring to EVERYTHING south of I-80 and WEST of US-395, or something smaller than this?

in addition to the truckee river, is the sw area also the CLOSEST area of the metro to access hiking / biking / outdoor activities in the surrounding national forests, lake tahoe, and washoe lake ?
