Default Traveling from CA to Reno and the snow

I will be moving to Fernley in a few months. It looks like the end of October. Should we be worrying about snow on the pass and the U Haul? When do they generally start requiring chains on I-80....and on the other end when is the last time?

Depends every year is different. ...... I don't think there will be any snow during that time. I would consult www.weather.com a few days before your move.

You never know. We have chained up for more Spring breaks than I care to count. I've seen road controls anywhere from September to early June

I have had to chain up in June and September before too but that was a long time ago and rare. We used to always vacation at Tahoe in October because it was so peaceful and quiet with far fewer tourists and it was usually nice, just colder at night. Normally there's only 2-3 inches at most in the entire month of October, then in November it really starts.

UNR's spring break 2011 found my DS and a ton of students on the wrong side of the mountains where it took them 2 days to get home because 80 was closed. Many a class was missed the Monday following spring break due to bad weather in the mountains.

UNR's spring break 2010 found us paying chain monkeys to chain us up for the ride over the hill to San Francisco.

2005 - we spent an extra 3 days in late December in California due to massive amounts of snow.

You just never know, overall if you pay attention you can come and go fairly regularly, you just never know

Thanks to all of you. I guess that the norm is like here on the central coast of CA. When someone says we are having really odd weather....I say are you kidding me.....the abnorm is our norm! So I guess it will be the same when I move....with the addition of snow. The I-80 is the only thing concerning me with the U Haul, but it is what it is LOL.
