I'm from the east coast but will be stuck on a project in Sacramento for two weeks starting October 1. My girlfriend is flying out for the weekend in the middle. I've done the San Fran thing a few times and don't really love the place. I was thinking of heading over to Reno/Tahoe as I've never been there. She's flying out of Reno Sunday morning. Where should we look into staying? Hoping to find a sort of romantic type of thing with enough pubs and such around to get a party on as well.

Thanks for any help!!

Silver Legacy or the El Dorado. They will both put you downtown near lots of bars, nightclubs etc.

If you want gambling with 24 hour bars, restaurants and maybe a live show, either Reno or Tahoe will work. If you want some nice scenery, go with Lake Tahoe. The major hotel/casinos are at the south shore. The major hotels are:

Harveys Lake Tahoe: Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino. Book Your Lake Tahoe Hotel Reservation Online
www.montbleuresort.com
Horizon Casino Resort - Lake Tahoe - Home
Harrah's Lake Tahoe

If you don't like that, there are lots of cheaper motels down the road on the CA side of the border.

While there, take a ride on the gondola to the top of a mountain for a nice view of the lake. (I don't think this will be cheap!!) Heavenly Ski Resort - Gondola overlooking Lake Tahoe

It might start getting cold by the first of October - but maybe not!

If you want to go with Reno, the Silver Legacy, El Dorado, Circus Circus (all next to each other - short walk to all three) are good choices as mentioned above.

We just got back from that area and 5 days was too short.

For a weekend only I would suggest an early arrival, maybe run up to Virginia City for a few hours mid-day,
too bad you will be a couple of weeks late for the annual camel & ostrich races there. Then spend the evening and night in Reno. The next morning you could drive over the Mt. Rose Highway to North Lake Tahoe,
around the east side on 89 to South Lake Tahoe, stopping to see the views now and then, and when you get there do the gondola, maybe a parasailing adventure or cruise around Emerald Bay, and a nice dinner at one of the many great restaurants. Our favorite was the Brewery. Then drive back to Reno in the evening via highway 50 and 395 through Carson City, about an hour and 20 minutes or head down 50 back to Sacramento.

Virginia City, Nevada

The Brewery at Lake Tahoe

Stay far away from Circus Circus, El Dorado, Silver Legacy. Harrah's Reno is way nicer and much more upscale, so is Grand Sierra but its not part of the downtown Reno area but you will have everything you need under one roof. South Tahoe is also very nice. Montbleu. Harrah's, Harvey's, 2 Marriott's to name a few. North Lake Tahoe, Ritz Carlton, Hyatt, both very nice and central

Like the other poster mentioned, Virgina City is a great place to visit and very local via car.

bunnman sending you a prive dm.

Thanks for the great advice! I opted for the romance of the lake over the fast pace of downtown and landed a great deal at Harvey's South Tahoe bidding through Priceline. She gets into SAC around 1pm so we will probably head up into the mountains and to South Tahoe right away and fool around down there through the afternoon and night. We'll likely do dinner at the Brewery as it seems to be my speed and is within 5 minutes of the hotel. Saturday we'll hit Carson and Virginia City...she LOVES odd history, prospecting tales, and especially ghost tours...both of those places seem ripe for that sort of thing. Glad we made the call to head east instead of west out of Sacramento! She'll be MUCH more excited about those two old towns than anything in San Fran.

Thanks so much!!!
