Looking at listings, noted a lot of nice newer single story 3BR 2Bath homes in the Spanish springs area right at the edge of the desert. Seem to be in the mid $200's with nice lots of 1/3 to 1/2 acre. Is there anything to know about living at the desert's edge? Rattle snakes, etc? We are retired and are considering the option of living in Reno.

Spanish Springs is beautiful and quiet and living along the desert is nice. It gives easy access to walks on the trails. I don't know about the snakes, I've never had a problem but one thing I would caution you about is if you have any cats. There are a lot of coyotes and if your cat gets out at all they will not come back! I lost two that way before I moved into town... Also if you have any allergies to sage it will drive you crazy, other than that it is a great way to go!

Thanks. Really good to know about the coyotes! We have an 8 lb chihuahua with one bad leg. I don't think she'd be a match for a coyote. Thanks again.

Can anybody tell me how long the commute from northern parts of Spanish Springs to southern portions of the city (say south of the Reno-Tahoe airport) would be, plus how bad the traffic commonly is?

30-45 minutes, depending on traffic. There are times you can sit behind a wreck on the freeway for an hour without moving. However, there are more routes to get around things than there used to be.

I live at the city limits on the south end of town, very suburban (not rural at all). In addition to coyotes we have seen mountain lions, bears, rattle snakes, deer, feral horses. The coyotes are bold enough to grab our chickens and sit on our patio, right outside the door. The coyotes took a neighbor's cat right off the front porch last year. Needless to say the coyotes, mountain lions, and snakes are not stopped by a fence so you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Black widows are a given. Although my husband minimizes the risk to our small dogs (they like to nose aorund the foundation of the house where the spiders like the best) by spraying the concreete foundation weekly after dark (when the spiders come out from under the siding to the cooler concrete foundation) with insecticide that he buys at Home Depot. And, never put your hands in a place your eyes have not looked first.
