1) City-data.com stats show the weather in Reno and CC being nearly identical, which didn't surprise me given the short distance between the two, but it showed a markedly higher rate of eathquakes for CC (1200% the national average vs. 900% for Reno; about 1100% for Virginia City). Sound right?

2) Are there any single family home gated communities in or near Carson City? I'm aware of the arguments against them (mainly not needed), but my wife wants to at lest know if there are any in the area. Preferably new or newer homes.

I've been through CC several times over the years but have never spent much time there. Thinking of it as a location for a part time home, eventual retirement home.

Thanks!

1) The entire area sits on several fault lines. I have been here 30+ years and have only felt 2 earthquakes, and they were very minor. I'd be more worried about fires than earthquakes.

2) There doesn't seem to be a lot of new housing going up right now. Gated communites are not all that big a thing here. Reno has some gated retirement communities and I think some general population gated communities in the Double Diamond and northwest areas. Most of the gated communities are situated around golf courses, etc.

This poster posts this same question on gated communities around elsewhere on City Data.

A reasonable response is:
Quote:
Here is the skinny on gated communities. the perps love them because the inhabitants think they are secure and therefore don't lock up as tightly as those in ungated communities. For my self, if I am visiting a friend in a gated community I don't bother with the code, I simply wait till someone else drives up, punches the code, and I follow them in, just like the perps do. Living in a gated community is like hanging a sign on your house that says, I got stuff worth stealing.

Now, I have been back in the area for 5 years, and have no idea where our house keys are, and have never locked our doors except at night when we are asleep (we don't want any perps waking the dogs)

That said, if you want security, get a dog, that is all you need, perps don't enter homes with barking dogs.
Regarding quakes, the Sierra Nevada raises 2 inches a year, which means frequent earthquakes, however, not to worry, they are Normal Faults.
