We live south of town and some areas are awfully windy and others not so bad. Washoe Valley and above the tree line up Mt Rose Hwy seem to be the worst. Pleasant Valley and anything east of Virginia St/580 seem to be ok. Our backyard and patio face southwest and the afternoon sun can be blistering during the summer. Some rocket scientist who lived in our house previously had installed a concrete patio along the entire back side. We eventually put a patio cover and shade cloth over the whole thing to make it usable and reduce our power bills! We have lost a few tarps to the wind, but nothing major. I've seen fences blown down in our neighborhod but they were either old or poorly built. There is an art to roofing and fencing here!

We live in the old northwest, we have occasional days of wind sometimes high. Worst I recall seeing here was 39mph. It's a slight breeze most days, I'm sure there are areas that funnel wind and get more but saying Reno as a whole is 'always windy' is simply not true.

I am from Tennessee, and I can tell you that 40 here feels nothing like 40 back home. The lack of humidity here makes it feel MUCH more comfortable. No income tax *at all* - no sneaky Hall Income tax! I have been outside in a short sleeved t-shirt here at 44 in the sun and been comfortable if I was being somewhat active and been FREEZING in TN at 44 even with a jacket.

The extended stay places to visit are mostly very iffy. You might do better to find a house swap or vrbo house or condo rental than the typical extended stay place. There are websites for house sitters, too. Good luck!

no income tax, but they get you in other ways...in Washoe County, gas is 20-40 cents a gallon higher than in Carson due to local taxes. Property tax is no bargain either, at least not in Reno.

Washoe County has a real money making deal going with Animal Control, they allow your neighbors to file complaints and a request for civil penalty if they claim your dog barks. You can have a hearing but you have to prove your dog didn't bark which is real tough unless you install a 24/7 audio-video surveillance system (which we did) First fine $100, 2nd - $200, 3rd-$400 if your neighbor files a 4th complaint you go to criminal court. Keep in mind, Animal control does not verify the complaints, their policy is "if you neighbor says your dog's barking is bothering them, that's enough for us to impose a civil penalty"

I guess it's understandable that they ding you with fees and fines, you simply can't run a state without money and Nevada does not seem to have the political will to increase taxes on mines and casinos.
