Hope you can help here We are moving to Reno in April and are having trouble finding an apartment for the northwest area, 89523 zip.
After viewing extensively for price, size etc I'm finding the online reviews very disturbing. No apartment is getting any good ratings.
Please, if possible, can you give some real opinions on which complexes rate best? We had picked out Montebello and Aviana, but scared now after seeing bad reviews.
Thank you for any suggestions you can provide.

I have lived in Mazanita Gate and they were very nice, although this was several years ago. Also, I never trust the apartment ratings online. I have read them for my current apartments, which I like very much, and have read ridiculous reviews. Certain people are always going to have a problem or issue with most things in their life and love to rant about them.

Your best bet is to visit them yourself, see how you feel about the staff, the grounds, and the residents you encounter. That is the only true way to know if a place will be right for you.

Thank you so much TxRed for your input. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of visiting ahead of time. I usually agree 100% with you about online reviews and know many are due to personal issues, but I found it a bit scary to see so many negative reviews all in one area and with all of the apartments.
There must be some current good news? I did the same review "test" in areas I know and none of them had so many negatives. I've been to the northwest area and found it to be very much to my liking, so hoping some current renters show up here to chase away my newfound fears.
Thank you again for your time.

This is good advice. Most apartment reviewers tend to be people with a grudge and looking to get revenge for a bad experience by making over-the-top negative comments about a place. Sometimes they're deserved, but often they're not. Most people don't take the time to praise an apartment complex, even if they're happy with their living arrangements, but far more will take the time to criticize.

Visiting in person and talking with current residents is probably the best way to go.

You might look at houses, they are really pretty cheap in Reno. I've seen some cute older places around midtown for around $900 check craigslist. One of the complaints I have heard about apartment complexes in this area is the shortage of parking spaces for a second car or a guest. Apartment reviews are funny, people usually only post a review when they have had serious problems. If you have to rent before you move here, maybe you should consider getting a monthly to month rental rather than getting stuck in a lease and finding out you hate the place?
