Hi, I am a young single, white, professional, female considering a position (residency) in reno, but I'm concerned that it would be difficult to find other single people my age out there. Any insight (I'm originally from the Midwest)? The other cities I'm looking at are DC, Denver, and Seattle.

I don't think you'll have any problems finding the twenty-something environment you're seeking. Reno is an active community, especially when compared with other smalls towns in the region (i.e., Carson, Minden, etc.), and it has a University in town (UNR).

Now, don't expect Reno to have the lifestyle opportuities of, oh let's say, Los Angeles, New York, or even San Francisco. Reno remains smaller than those regions of the country, but it also doesn't have the associated problems of such major metropolitan areas.

Reno has also been going through a renaissance in it's downtown area. It's improved from the it's "Biggest Small Town" past, and it will only get better through the years. It currently offers venues that you might find attractive as a twenty-something. However, remember that it won't be as extensive as some larger cities.

Reno also offers countless outdoor recreational opportunities. Tahoe is close, for it's boating and sking opportunities. The Sierra Nevada mountains are right out your back door for hiking and exploring, and then you have the Nevada wilderness if you're into horsemanship, dirtbikes, or other recreational sports such as shooting, ghost town, exploration, or even fishing in the streams that exit the Sierra Nevada.

Day trips are also easy drives from Reno. You can easily spend the day in Sacramento (Calif capitol), which would be less than a two hour drive from Reno. You also have San Francisco within four hours by car. It's not a drve I'd do every day, but it makes for a nice diversion one in a while.

As for how Reno compares to other areas you described, that's something you have to decide for yourself. I would prefer to shy away from doing a compare and contrast type evaluation. Let me just ay that Denver and Seattle can be beautiful areas in which to live and play. Each has their positives and each has their negatives. It all depens on what you're seeking.

Personally, I would stay far away from DC, but that's just my feelings. Yes it has history and culture, but it's also a dirty crime-ridden place. If I had a daughter, I would not be pleased if she was settling in DC, just from a safey standpoint.

So, I hope others respond to your post. I also hope you consider Reno and I wish you the bests with your residency.

I'm 30, and honestly It has been difficult for me to find people of my age I live in the south east part of Reno. I really don't know where to go unless if is to the movies or the river. I don't have a car and it seems to be necessary in order to go places. As I moved here alone due to a Job offer, I don't have friends and most of the people here are older than 40 I am really suffering to be honest. As I come from another country, I used to live in cities with museums and a lot of nightlife and events, but I have only found that casinos are the lifestyle here. I am not complaining, I love this city, but it's just that I don't know where to start.

Vidi - have you tried using craigslist or other social websites to find some activity partners but you have to be very vigilant in screening the people there. A friend of mine was able to find some new friends to do activities with. Not having a vehicle can be difficult but not impossible.

Yup, I tried that, and there is no people of my age, I have gone to 3 meetups and I meet great people, but most of them are +45... so I can't talk about Game of Thrones or Movies or Electronic Music with them.
