My sister lives in South Lake Tahoe and called Charter Cable to see if they offered a "lifeline" cable service, (local channels along with community access channels, etc..) She was told they do not and the most basic package was 60.00 a month so she cancelled service and retained internet only in order to save money.
She was frustrated because she tried different sized antennas to receive either Reno or Sacramento local channels.. but nothing. They guy at Radio Shack told her that off-air, local channels cannot be received in most of Tahoe and her only option is Charter or satellite. Satellite is out of the question because of all the trees.

Two questions:
Aren't cable operators required to offer a basic, lifeline service to customers?
Why doesn't Reno offer relays or translator channels to bring a clear signal into the Tahoe Basin? When I lived in Seattle they had several translator channels to bring local programming into the mountain communities there.

The broadcast antennas are atop Slide mountain just South of Mt Rose. Is she using a digital antenna? I'm 18 miles North of Reno and Peavine peak blocks me from these towers. I still can get 4 channels through my digital antenna? Has anyone thought about a Roku? I have Netflix for $8 that comes through my internet.

If she has a computer she can just stream local channels online. It's how I watch the news. Then most tv shows on major channels can be viewed online the day after the show has aired.

Had no success trying to help a friend get on air TV in South Lake Tahoe... before the conversion... she had a couple of channels... since... nothing.
