Is Reno a good place to live? (Carson City, Pahrump: sales, real estate)

I certainly have not been all over the county but have been able to live in 3 states now and several towns and cities and have come to the conclusion that the towns I once lived in and thought weren't great, well they were pretty nice (yes that is regret you hear).
I always have my eye out no matter where I am but even more living here.

My parents live in Spanish Springs and if we don't ever leave a 3 mile radius it is wonderful.

I think we all often think the grass is greener on the other side, then we move and think wow, I didnt know how good I used to have it when you end up in a place you dislike.

Gosh that is so true, you really learn what things you like and dislike when you have experienced many different places. I just wish I could mold my own perfect town

Im not sure I could even do that. I think I want to live in an area where everyone knows each other and are very friendly and has a small community feel and the locals all do things for each other and togther, but then, I miss the big city and the hub-bub. Im afraid I will never be happy anywhere I go. I know I was not as dicontent in Maine as I am here, and I know I never used totalk about/worry about/obsess about money like I do here. I know people were not as rude as they are here, but, I am sure if I moved back I would be fed up with something or other. I think it all boils down to family and close circle of friends and feeling like you belong and are settled.

It's like you are reading my mind, I too want the small town but the larger city amenities. I think I would like to live in a small town 20 miles outside a big city. Which is why I am thinking about Minden even though it's not far from Carson City it's still small town.
I would have stayed in Idaho if it weren't for the weather and poor residential planning.
It's very hard to find that perfect or almost perfect spot.
Good point about family and friends, that is what's most important which is why I probably will not move far from here.

I think Reno is a fine place to live. It's all in what you like and/or are used to I suppose. As they say, different strokes for different folks. My sister-in-law has lived in the Philippines, Syracuse, Vietnam, Cape Town South Africa, Washington D.C., as well as traveled to all parts of the U.S. and always enjoys coming home to Reno. I myself travel quite a bit and have only ever entertained the posibility of leaving Reno after visiting Portland and Seattle (I plan to retire in the Pacific Northwest).

The thing about Reno is that it's first and foremost a tourist town. The economy is the most diverse in all of Nevada, but newcomers tend to notice and be irritated by things that natives overlook. If you are bugged by seeing ads for brothels on cab cars or slot and/or video poker machines in everything from the local convenience store to the airport to restaurants, Reno may not be for you. Reno has a very relaxed, laid back vibe. People seldom dress up to go out (which can be viewed as a good or a bad thing). People are generally friendly and helpful and the city has a variety of dining, entertainment, and recreational opportunities for a metropolitan area under 500k. Reno also has a blossoming arts community that has grown dramatically over the past decade. Another big plus is our relative close proximity to Sac and S.F., both of which offer GREAT shopping and a nice weekend getaway. As far as bums go, it's absolutely no worse than any other city on the west coast I've visited. In fact, our bums tend to be more low-key IMO.

As different as Reno is from Vegas, they both are love it or hate it type of towns. Only you can decide if Reno is right for you. Good luck!

Reno is on our list of possible places to retire to. Before we make our final decision we intend to go to the places that have made the final cut and rent a place and live there until we get a feel for the place and know if it's for us or not. It's not a foolproof method but it's better than nothing.

Great idea! nothing like sampling the places out first, you would hate to buy and be stuck.

(And this is coming from a 2nd generation Native Nevadan who was born and raised in Reno)

Why are many long-time Reno residents so afraid of change? The people here are so anti-growth it's amusing. If left to it's less forward-thinking residents, Reno would still be a one horse town with nothing more than gaudy casinos, dirty old bars, trailer parks, and sagebrush.


My $0.02: I hated Reno in the 80's. I disliked Reno in the 90's. I quite like Reno circa 2008. In many ways that matter to me (arts/culture, shopping, variety of entertainment options, beautification of public spaces, overall cleanliness, etc.), Reno has drastically improved in the past 10-12 years. Now they just need to work on the schools and implement better grafitti removal.
