Yes I have a few high school friends that purposely moved back here to raise families but most of them ran from here can't say I blame them....... I have a cousin from sac who is going to UNR and loves it but she's a 20 something from CA who like to go out and drink and hang in the casinos all night what a depressing way of life...
There is great irony in the fact that you're looking for intelligent people, but using absolutely awful grammar. Reno residents are much more educated than their Vegas counterparts! Vegas schools and the percentage of workforce with an education are among the lowest in the nation. Reno on the other hand is about average.

Naomi, I feel for you and can definitely see where you're coming from. I absolutely loved my time in Reno, but that was while I was in college and lower 20s with many peers my age. The fact is this would be an awful place to be single in your 30s as there is almost no young urban professional class. I do think this will change over time as the city gains better jobs and a more educated workforce, but you're making the right decision.

I hope things go well for you!

I said about average not above average. No need to be so hostile...

Trust me I realize that Reno is not the most educated place. But it is significantly better than Vegas. The social ills of Vegas bring the whole state down for QOL statistics.

Unless you view them, not as social ills, but as letting people live as adults and make decisions for themselves. Is LV for everyone? Nope. Evidently many people like to be told what they can and can't do. How do the "social ills" affect the education? I think it is more about a corrupt school district, overcrowding, and wasteful government spending (i.e. spending tax money on things OTHER than education), that correspond to the bad education system in Clark County. I don't think it has anything to do with gambling or having a beer while walking down the street, which I am assuming you are referencing with "social ills".

Raiderman, my apologies, again I guess I mistyped. I am very libertarian, and absolutely miss the live and let live vibe of Nevada. By social ills in Vegas I am referring to the large amount of poverty, and recent immigrants learning English as a second language. That greatly brings down the states education rankings. I completely agree with everything you just wrote.

Moving to Southern California-- an absolutely huge area, so knowing exactly where you're going would mean a lot-- without a job? Wow. Risky. I am originally from L.A. There are many places you could feel more isolated than in Reno, but comparing one city (Reno) with an entire geographic region, such as So Cal, is tough. Have you compared rents? Reno is not exacty Winnemucca. If by So Cal you mean L.A or San Diego, I can see the appeal IF I could afford it. If you end up in, say, Bakersfield or Blythe or Mojave, it's a different ball game.

I'm born and raised in LA and lived in San Diego for work for 2 years. Sorry, should have stated that. I'm also staying with family until I get a job offer. I no longer want to live this far from family. At this point in my life I really don't see myself leaving SOCAL (meaning LA, OC, and San Diego). I would take parts of N. Cal because I do have family there but I prefer being close to a place where I have a lot of family and friends, and just in general where I'm happier.

Given that (maybe you'd mentioned it, but I didn't retain it), and given how you feel here, absolutely going to SoCal sounds like the way to go.

If I felt like I have a social system here, I would stay but after 2 years, I still don't have 1 friend.
