Hi,
We are moving to the Reno area with middle school children. I was just reading on a thread here that the schools were bad? Isn't the Davidson Academy for gifted children one of the top schools in the country? Also, what about the magnet school program and the Advanced Academic programs within the Washoe school district? Are these programs new? I am reading all about these programs and see that several of the schools are top rated by Great Schools and Niche. A score of 10, for instance at Katelyn Depoali, Hunsburger, Billinghurst, Caughlin Ranch and Roy Gomm. Please fill me in because we are about to move there and I need to know which school would be best! Thank you! Is there any kind of moms group for school age kids to get this kind of info?

Bad depends on how you measure and who you pay to do the study. IMO there is no such thing as a good 'public' schools. I wouldn't rely on any studies, period. In short if you're going to put your children in the hands of the state you take your chances no matter where you go.

Best bet is to be involved in your child's education as much as you possibly can. Read what they're being taught, research anything questionable (with your child if he/she is old enough) and do you best to make sure they get a good education and learn to be a critical thinker. And encourage self motivated learning.

Davidson is not a run of the mill private school for bright kids, Davidson is on the campus at Univ. of NV Reno and is for the extremely bright kids. My DS had a 16 year Davidson student who was a nuclear physicist in one of his classes when he was in college. This school is for the prodigy kids. Parents move to Reno from all over the country for this school.

Good public alternative is Coral Academy of Science, an excellent charter school.
