Ehh, I don't necessarily think that's terrible. Downtown needs to get rid of the 70s facades. Hopefully Cal-Neva is next.

I just hope he does a good job with that property...

Dave, I suggest that you start a campaign to move the sign to California. We all know that California loves to spend massive amounts of taxpayer dollars on pet projects and this would only be a drop in the bucket. The folks in Nevada could then visit the sign any time they wish

It's really not that expensive to move. There are plenty of run down sections of downtown Reno the are West of Virginia Street that could use it. Old Vegas had it's history. Downtown Reno had become a joke.

Seems like a good reason to cut the sign loose and let the citizens of California take possession, in order to preserve their reputations as kind, generous and caring neighbors. Based on the groundswell of local support that didn't arise earlier, I'd wager that the citizens of Nevada don't want it.

The thing is that type of stuff is really what makes or made Reno what it is. Now it will look like any other city like Boise Idaho. I wouldn't really object to California taking it but where. Downtown LA, Hollywood, SF?

Dave, there are still plenty of ugly neon signs downtown (Cal Neva). The same property owner (Siegel) is going to light up the El Cortez sign again.

El Cortez Rooftop Sign to be Modified

Downtown Reno has plenty to make it unique, it needs to focus on improving and giving people a reason to come here. This building has been abandoned for years, and he is turning it into apartments. As long as he does a halfway decent job, it will be a huge positive for downtown.
