Default I need some advice about motels and what areas to check out.

My wife and I will be coming to Reno at the end of May to see if the Reno/Sparks area has the feel we are looking for as a place to retire to. I could use the name of a decent (doesn't have to be fancy just clean & quiet) reasonably priced motel or hotel.

Are there areas that we should avoid and areas we should concentrate on? We would prefer not to live in a subdivision unless we can have a lot where the neighbors aren't on top of us. Our maximum price is $275k.

There are plenty of nice hotels downtown. I would say Silver Legacy, El Dorado, or the Sienna.

As far as where to live, it just depends on what you want. If you don't want the average cookie-cutter home than I would say Old SW Reno or near Wells Ave. I also think downtown would be a great place to live, if you don't mind a highrise.

Thanks Dave. I don't think we want a downtown hotel if there is a lot of traffic since time is important to us and we will be looking at houses. Also a motel would probably cheaper. I doubt a highrise comes with any land (just joking).

There are a couple of Motel 6's not too far from I-80. One is on Wells Ave off I-80.

I doubt you could buy a place in a downtown high rise for that amount of money anyway. The new Montage has one room only apartments for sale, (living room, kitchen, bedroom is all in the same one room) size of room is: 600 SF, for $250,000+ and they only get more expensive the bigger they get.

Handitak, while that may be true for new condo's you can easily buy a nice place for 275k. In the Arlington Towers, Park Tower, and sometimes Riverfront Towers you can get a 2 bedroom for that price.

I recommend the Atlantis for hotels. JMO of course. There are soooo many foreclosures and short sales right now, you should have no problem getting a home. The red tape might be the biggest problem that you'll have.

There are a few homes with a little bit of land (.30 to 1 acre) in the N.Valleys and Cold Springs areas. Some of the homes are newer, some are not.

It all depends on what you want and where you want it. If you wanted to drive, you could look into places that are farther from the Reno/Sparks area such as Fernley, Carson City, Chilcoot, CA, Portola, CA, Gardnerville, ect....

I'm really not going to buy anything on this trip. We just want to check different cities out and then after we make our choice we will go back before my wife retires (in 22 months) to seriously look for a house

I would recommend the Peppermill (great prices), there is also the Courtyard by Mariott that has a good location but I really don't know how quite it would be.
Also there is the Hampton Inn at the south end of town. None of these are downtown.
Have fun while you visit!
