What would be the best way to get to Carson City from Los Angeles in a small RV this time of year? CA395 or CA 5/CA99 to CA50? Thanks in advance for your input

During this time of the year I'd say go up I-5 to Sacramento then east on I-80 to Reno, then south on 395 to Carson City.

The storms predicted this year are pretty strong so stay on the major interstates.

I do this drive a couple times a year, 395 is infinitely more interesting and relaxing as long as the weather holds. Even if there is a storm going over 50 in the snow is no joke.

Check the weather. It's been snowing off and on in Reno for a while.

It would help to know what you consider 'best'.. and more about your small RV (Unimog chassis expedition RV.. or van conversion with highway tires and 2wd)?

If speed is important, I-5 North to I-80 East would be the safest bet weather wise. I would make sure to have tire chains before the trip rather than risk being stuck or having to pay highway robbery prices for poor quality chains at the last minute.

If 'best' to you means the most places to see along the way, nice scenery, etc.. not in a big hurry AND experienced driving under snowy/icy conditions. 395 is a nice drive, and there's plenty to see along the way.

Highway 50 will likely be sketchy, it tends to have a fair amount of traffic and should be clear however it'll be slow going.

Thanks everyone! We made the trip safely up on 395. A little scary Mammoth to Bridgeport but after that smooth sailing. Took the long route home through the desert 50-95-6-395 which was quite scenic. That is how we'll make or Death Valley trips in the future. Moving up to Mound House February 12th and hoping for clear weather then. Found out that the RV has M/S rated tires which somewhat helps.

M+S rated tires are better, if you have 4wd those tires count as snow tires for the purpose of chain restrictions which is very handy.

Glad you made it safe and sound.
