That place is a wreck, which is sad, but it is true. To top it off, California punishes those that take care of themselves from the crime it helps breed. Reno is a nice corner of heaven. It is NOT the south, where the sugar-sweet "fake nice" is practiced. It is Libertarian, freedom loving and blunt. There are plenty of a-holes, yes. But there are some in every group. People out here are frank and to the point. It is cultural. A coworker of mine is from Alabama, and she has a hard time communicating with locals. I remind her that people are and have always been more forward and direct out here and that they mean no ill will. People aren't all rude, they are different.
Also, I work for a VERY lucrative company. There are some great places to work in the science and tech fields out here.

In no way was I comparing this place to California....Most people know that is ....well I will get tossed for saying it! I don't not asking for what you call "fake nice"....what we called it while growing up was "manners". This place is this way... 1. Because of California and us adapting their culture! 2. Because we when do have a raid here on illegal aliens because of an identity them thing that was going on...what happened is the ICE ended up having to explain that they were not just randomly going after illegal aliens, that there was a reason behind this (I thought that they were just supposed to find them and deport them, not wait until they commit crimes to do something about it, then have to appologize...the pendulum has swung way too far the other way now) 3. This is a very transient place...for a reason.
Not rude? Different? There are nice people with manners...what this place attracts is not many of the nice ones. Maybe it is what this world is now. It never runs through thier minds that being "different...aka...rude" can hurt people/ruin thier day etc. When you go to other places, where immigration is a big thing but you go into a store and are greeted politely, not looking for someone that can understand you and they say please and thank you, call you ma'am and sir, is not a "fake-nice" We dont need to be California-Jr. This is still The United States of America (although I wonder sometimes when walking through Walmart) and this "not rude/different" stuff is what our kids see and in turn, they are going to same way. If people had manners, maybe you wouldnt see how most of these kids talk to their teachers. It is just sickening.

The drug problem in reno isn't bad. If u are deciding to move move to nothwest reno. Do drugs up here, schools are great. But u might want to consider earthquakes, there have been alot of earthquakes lately and about 1 month ago we had a 4.7, pretty big. They have died down a bit, but if u have little kids they might be scared cause there are a lot of earthquakes.

As far as the earthquakes go, just think we may have beach front property soon.
As far as the said rude folks, I beleive that has to do with tourist. Here in Alaska we hate to see the tourist show up every spring and summer, they are very rude and they have the attitude that if it wasn't for the tourist we wouldn't survive. They apparently don't research their travels, Alaska will do very well without all the tourists, but I'm not sure about the Reno, Las Vegas area if you take away the tourist away for those city what would happen to them. Can each stand alone without the tourist coming in and gambling?
You know I don't live in Nevada yet will before winter, but I will live 125 miles north of Reno and plan to enjoy the peace and quiet up there. The folks I've met in our area have been the most welcoming folks a total treat to be around. Is is because we great them with excitment as well, I would bet that if we treated them rudely they would treat us rudely.
So I guess the big question about the folks around there is it them or is it you and they're reciprocating.

As a native of the area, I tell you the people that keep coming bring their negative views on everything and trash the place. NOTHING is good, everything is Redneck and bad, unlike where they came from of course. The Native Nevadan is open to people, courteous, and respectful of other peoples views and space. People from, oh say the Bay Area or back east, bring their bad attitudes, bizarre racial and cultural beliefs, and generally force it on the locals.
For example:
My wife is a very well educated, 1st generation Hispanic woman who went to some very elite schools. Yet from the Bay Area transplants (you know the open minded and "progressive" ones?) she gets quasi-racist remarks and funny looks when she does not speak with some low brow accent or agree with their victim politics when it comes to "minorities".
These people have the same "we are right, you are wrong, and we will fix you" attitude when it comes to EVERYTHING. The idea that people can carve out their own existence, separate from the group, aggravates them to no end. The Libertarian philosophy has been a hallmark of the states culture for many years. Come experience it before the before the Californians ruin it like they did to their state and turn it into a welfare, police state.

Reno is dirty and rundown. The homeless are rampant. The police are worthless! Reno is #1 in US for internet ID theft! Every sign in the city is tagged by punks. Th whole city needs to be hosed down and cleaned up!

I grew up in Reno, and graduated in 01... The schools were not bad at all. Never saw drugs, or anything like that. Every so often you would see a fight in high school. But nothing to worry about..

Washoe County schools took the No Child Left Behind and ran with it. Their mode of operation is to slow all the kids down to the slowest learners level, so that nobody gets their feel goods hurt. They are all about not offending anyone, and making sure everyone feels good.
We moved FROM Reno in June, and moved to Texas and in my humble opinion, Reno is the best place to be FROM.

Hmmm, if I believe some of these posts, schools sure have changed in the 22 years since I graduated from Reed. I never saw drugs at my school, not once. And if a child didn't learn fast enough and got "left behind", well, we left 'em and I spent my days in honors classes like AP Calculus. My education was good enough to get me into a very good private university in Southern California. I think parents have a lot to say about the attitude their children have towards education. If children are raised to see the importance of a good education, they can make the most out of whatever school they're in. Still, sounds like for a lot of folks, private school may be the way to go these days

reno schools
My oldest goes to McQueen HS. Good school, but overall, Reno lacks a good educational system. HUGE lack of funds for school that the gov keeps cutting again and again. Parents dish out a lot of money/supplies. My youngest goes to Billinghurst middle school. Good school, good neighborhood, VERY crowded; has grades 6-8. Reno keeps building houses (we have very little water here-it's a desert!), but NO new schools. I work in the health profession and have seen a horrific amount of meth abuse. Worked as a public health nurse & saw HUGE amount of child abuse as well. I work closely with the police & there is a rise in heroin use. Good luck. There's not a lot of things to do here for anyone of any age.
