Still on our retirement hunt, and looking at NV locations.

What do you feel are the pros- and cons- of Sparks versus Carson City?

We like outdoorsy activities, and good food (creative, fresh, etc.).

Housing would be in 500 to 600k range, and we like bigger lots (between 1/4 acre and 1 acre).

Want a good balance between not seeing/hearing our neighbors, but be close to shopping etc.

Try South Reno or Gardnerville if you want big lot. Virginia Highland has very big lot ( 10 acres) but you need well and septic.

Gosh no!!! Like I mentioned, .25 to 1 acre. That's large for us.

You'll find more retail and housing options in Sparks, which is growing quickly (and more quickly than Carson City). Carson City is closer to Lake Tahoe and its plentiful outdoor activities. So, either city has its advantages.

Since you've included Sparks, are you also including Reno?

We haven't really considered Reno. We will be traveling to the area in July. Also, DH will be in Reno this month.

Decisions, decisions...

Spark adjoins Reno. Reno is actually more upscale and prosperous than Spark.

South Reno especially can give you the best of both worlds - less than an hour to the north shore of Lake Tahoe, about an hour to Tahoe's south shore, and many more housing, retail and dining options. I would recommend adding that to your list.

Reno also has more houses and lots on the hill with great view. Spark has few similar areas. Carson City has next to none.

Agreed, plus the restaurant and shopping scene is much better IMHO.
