I am going to be spending a few days around Lake Tahoe, and I would like to know if there are any towns within an hour or so from the lake worth visiting? I'm fairly up to speed on towns surrounding the lake, but not the ones relatively nearby. I also, however, don't want to waste vacation days visiting something that I should pass up for something else (I'm ultimately going toward the coast). Any ideas?

It depends on what you're looking to do. Reno is about an hour away from the south shore, Carson City about 30 minutes, Gardnerville and Minden about the same.

Try Virginia city. You will be transported to the OLD WILD WEST.

I agree. We go to Tahoe every year and almost always drive up to VC. Also, if you have kids, Reno (on the way) has a fantastic Discovery Museum, and a nice railroad museum.

I believe Reno has the auto museum and Carson City has the railroad museum. Either way, good suggestion.

Yes, the railroad museum is in Carson City. And on that note there is a short train ride in Virginia City that is fun for the kids as well.

Be careful with VC. This time of year there can be events every weekend up there. Not a huge amount of parking. And be careful if there's a motorcycle event - that can be hard to deal with if not used to.

Traffic around Lake Tahoe in the summer is heavy. Unless you plan on doing something at the lake, such as taking a paddle wheel boat across it or doing some boating, I would stay away. (You can see the lake in the winter just as easy without all the traffic.) Virginia City is well worth the visit and if you can swing tickets, take the train from Carson City to Virginia City. You can actually park the car in Carson City and use the train to get up to Virginia City, just do not miss the last one back.)

You might want to see Fort Churchill if you are into history.
