We are hoping to visit Tahoe in either late December or early January. We live in San Diego and were going to drive but wondering if the snow/roads will be bad during that time of year? Are people able to fly into the Lake Tahoe airport? Are there any shuttles from the Reno airport? We don't mind visiting during the snowy season but were concerned about driving up there. Any info would be super helpful! Thank you!

Yes, there is shuttle from Reno airport.

I haven't used this service yet

The drive from Reno or Carson city is generally easily and less snow. If you rent the car in RNO, you can rent snow chain as well.

We can't really predict the weather. If you drive during the snow storm, the road will be bad. After 24 hr, the roads will be pristine.

Check with major hotels for shuttles from RNO.

If you rent a vehicle, get 4-wheel drive. The rental companies don't like chains installed on their vehicles and often the roads will only allow 4-wheel drive vehicles if you happen to be here during a major storm. Roads can be dicey for 24 hours or so, especially overnight and early morning but generally the sun comes out and melts much of it away.

I've lived here for 30+ years and you can be wearing shorts in Dec or be -30. You'll just have to watch the weather forecast. Even if the weather is warm there is usually still plenty of snow in the mountains if you are coming to ski, etc.

Yes, nothing has changed since then. I'm coming in January, and plan to keep my cattle close by, and my wagon will have snow tires.
