Hi,

I am a 34 year old single no kids, California bay area native and can't afford it here anymore. Plus the jobs are non-existent. I have a friend who is willing to let me stay with her until I get a job and get on my feet in Reno.

My question is are there any jobs there? And what about junior colleges?
My goal is to work and go to a junior college/nursing program to become a RN or possibly a Certified Nursing aide or Radiologist. I can't afford to go to a 4 year University so it has to be a junior college with a medical division so I can get into the medical field..

As far as a job goes, I can do pretty much anything. I have alot of experience in customer service/call centers/retail/cashier/dog walking/training/reception/office asst/admin/manager... I've had alot of jobs.. My passion is animals and helping people..

Any help would be appreciated.. Also, what areas of Reno should I stay away from, you know the high crime/not safe areas?

Thanks,
Maria

Yikes, good luck. If you can't find suitable work in SJ you're all but guaranteed not to find any here.

I don't know of any 2 year RN programs, all to my knowledge are 4 year. You have a lot more options for schooling in the Bay Area for sure.

You can get jobs, but they'll most likely be fast food, casino or customer service. All of which pay peanuts.

Nothing is 'bad' in Reno, or so bad that you'd avoid it. I'm sure others will chime in the the borders of what to avoid, I haven't been here long enough to know and I'll be damned if I stay long enough to learn.

Proceed with caution.

Reno has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation and higher than California mostly because we attracted a lot of construction industry jobs during the housing boom and now they're all unemployed and probably taking jobs outside of construction like serving food. However, Reno is cheaper than the bay. There is relatively low crime here especially compared to the bay. There are tiny pockets of crime areas like around Pat Baker Park, Grove Street, Neil Road, but seriously, nothing like the bay.

Our "junior college" is a community college called Truckee Meadows Community College and I think it has some type of nursing program. You can find them online. Lot cheaper rents here than the bay.

Truckee Meadows Community College has a great 2-year nursing degree program.

Finding a job is definitely more challenging these days, however, you have a lot of randomly good experience under your belt, and I feel confident that if you apply yourself you could probably find a job within a reasonable time frame. Check the Reno/Tahoe Craigslist for recent job openings.

As far as places to stay away from, I feel like it varies from block to block. It's hit and miss in some areas. Some nice places to live would be south Reno, old South West Reno, Northwest... I personally don't prefer the North East end of Reno. Some down town is quite nice. You just have to know where to hunt. Good luck!

No jobs here..... and most employers are only hiring NV residents who have been here for many yrs. To many people are coming here thinking its cheaper and to find work its not.

Get a job first then apply for school

I don't get how people see that NV leads the nation in unemployment and they come here thinking they're going to be the anomaly that defies the statistic and makes a killing in the process.

I cannot tell you why you should move to Reno, but I can tell you why you should not. I lived in reno but move to Truckee, Calif. Maybe it is just because I am retired and like the slow and safe living of a small town. Reno, I remember is a dangerous place to live. and if you have children don't even think about it. Just my opinion.

Dangerous? Compared to what? The real danger here, IMO, with kids is boredom leading to drugs/drinking, etc.

Nothing happens in Reno, watch the 11pm news. It's 15 minutes long and focuses on the weather and sports. The rare incidence of violence is localized to certain communities...same as it is in most places.
