I have never heard of any trail riding groups.

The North Valleys and Spanish Springs will give you the best access to trails with minimal hassle. If you live there you can saddle up and ride your horse from your yard. There are places in the Southwest where you can have horses and ride, but you would have to be on pavement a long time to get to a trail, and even then it may be private property.

I don't think that mountain riding is crowded at all, as I never see anyone doing it. Most places you can ride a bike you can take your horse, I guess. The closest places like around Boca reservoir toward Truckee are about 25 minutes from Reno. Tahoe about an hour--but I am not sure where you'd go around Tahoe.

Dog Valley in Verdi is the best if you like being in the trees. The main trail loops around and ends up on the other side of Peavine, almost to Bordertown. It's close, too.

You can go East and pick your spot, pretty much. Also, that is assuming by mountains you mean the Sierras, as there are mountains all over.
