We live about a mile from downtown. The people have been friendly. Every single city WILL have crime.. I see the whining in posts on here sometimes, but oh please, it's everywhere.
We've had no issue finding jobs. I turned down a couple before I settled on what I wanted.
So far, that's been our experience with Reno.

say 'no' to Reno
I've lived here for 20 years. Hoping to leave this bland place within a yr. Here's what I and others complain about the most:
- only 2 seasons: HOT & COLD. They brag about 300 days of sun, but they don't say that most those days are either around 100 degrees or below 40 and LOTS of WIND EVERYDAY - can't even sit in your backyard most of the time. VERY dry, BROWN, gray, smog (reminds me of when I lived near LA). Very little rain.
- traffic; roads are always being repaired also, but never improved.
- lack of cultural events; yes, there's hot august nights and a motorcyle event in September, but they cause traffic, noise, drugs and drunkedness. You see one of these events and it's the same year after year. Went to art museum last week...boring and short event. Farmer's Market in Sparks; so many people that it's difficult to walk around is more of a bunch of drunks and druggies getting together, too hot to enjoy & expensive. The Truckee River that runs through downtown has had cement added to it which ruined it and is filled with litter (people & trash). Dangerous even during the day. No other water resource to enjoy beside a water park. There is Sparks Marina--it's a huge ditch that was once owned by a cement company. The city didn't know what to do with it especially since the gas/oil tanks across the freeway were leaking into it. Now it's filled with water and has "bugs" in it (took samples for microbiology; won't let my kids or dog near the water; when you step on the sand, it seeps black like a sewer).
- too many uneducated people; areas that were nice when I moved here in 1989 that were nice are now slum-like. There are also MANY illegal immigrants, shootings, gang violence, drugs. I worked for the health dept and now a hospital and continuously see a TON of meth abuse and child abuse. Also seeing a rise in heroin use.
- EXPENSIVE to live; nice apartments (3 bdrm >= $1550/mo); 3 bdrm house in nice area > $260K.
- not much to do any time of the year. Winter: skiing, other snow sports; Summer: Lake Tahoe (only 40 miles away, but it takes 2 hrs to get to south shore), mtn biking.
-wages are not that great compared to what it cost to live here and I have a good job/college degree in health care.
-not much grows here; you can have your flowers and other garden items from June til Oct if you're lucky, & need lots of care due to heat and poor quality of dirt.

Sounds to me like you need a change in scenery.
Where are you going?

yeah, 10 years ago, the residents there were still nice and would smile, wave hi, the language of choice was english...and you could live a decent life on blue collar wages. Now, the residents are very rude..even those in a customer service oriented industry (casinos), there are really no smiles or waves anymore, brush up on your foreign language that way you can communicate with the illegals that have driven the wages to the bottom of the barrel (sp?)...yes, the place HAS changed markedly.

Nice sweeping generalization there. All residents are rude? I don't think so, and I have rarely come across a rude person in the customer service industry. I've lived here a couple years and I have yet to not be able to communicate with someone in English, though I agree that there are some areas where that may be difficult. Good luck finding a sizable city where that's not the case. Driving through my neighborhood, people wave and smile. I don't expect people in the next lane on the highway to wave and smile, though, so maybe my expectations aren't that high.
