Need Advice on potential move to Reno
I am just wanting to hear about life in Reno, or Tahoe area. I am considering a move there soon. I grew up in Central Pennsylvania and now live in Tampa, FL. I want to know about careers/jobs, and how the people are there. A fellow North Easterner's opinion might be especially helpful. I am 30 something and single with a degree. Very down to earth, but adventuresome!

Reno is quite small and therefore lacks quite a bit in the economy of its workforce... sure you can get a job here but unless you are an accountant, you may not be happy with what you find.
Las Vegas has way more opportunities and will pay better too. Reno is an awesome place to visit but it isn't the best place to live!

Reno isn't that small. We are big enough now that there are areas I have never been to, and stuff I have never seen. More every day, we are growing so fast.
The people are stand-offish at first, but once hey warm up are great. This could be because of the nature of the casino world. Most people I know rarely go near them--except the Little Nugget downtown for oyster shooters and Awful-Awfuls (burgers that are awful big and awful good!).
There are plenty of jobs here. The growth here is INSANE right now.
Reno is pretty laid-back, and is more bar-oriented than club-oriented. There has been a cool little punk scene since the late 70s, centered around the Wells Ave. area. We get some cool bands, but SF is really close so we have no trouble hitting The City and seeing a show and partying there for the weekend. It's only 3 hours or so away (@ 70+ ).
There is lots to do in the outlying areas, like mountain biking, skiing, motorcycling/quad riding, hunting, fishing, hot springs. It's really fun. And Burning Man is definitely something to check out if you haven't.
I grew up here, and I think it's awesome. Property values are ridiculous, but that is the only thing I don't like.

If you own a jacked-up, gas guzzling pick-up, drive like an a-hole, chain smoke, throw your empties out your truck window, think that the Olive Garden is fine dining and want to grossly overpay for a cheaply built McMansion in a "Master Planned" neighborhood... come on out, you'll fit right in.

Now, wasn't THAT a positive reply?!! We moved here last summer from WI and we love it, but we are married with a child. It has been awhile since I have been single, but I would say that if you LOVE the outdoors and enjoy a slower way of life than many metro areas provide, you will like it.

I'll give you my 10 cents about the people while I was there and in South Lake Tahoe for 2 weeks early December,
I didn't meet or come across one rude person whatsovever, whether it was in Reno asking for directions or walking around town, maybe because I was a tourist I don't know, but maybe I just struck the right people on the right day

I should clarify... I have homes in both Reno and North Lake Tahoe. My previous post pertains to Reno. Lake Tahoe is a magnificent place to have within a short drive if your interests include hiking, skiing, mt. biking, or just crisp mountain air. Tahoe locals are mostly laid back, adventuresome and very content to live there. But, Tahoe's small towns may not be ideal for you depending on what your professional aspirations may be.
Reno offers more options as far as jobs go, but is still fairly limited compared to many other places. Other areas of lacking are arts, culture, city pride, and education. Downtown is trashy and full of shady, desperate people. "Safer" neighborhoods are mostly cookie cutter suburbs. Your auto insurance will go up when you move here due to a much higher than average claims rate, also.
I'm married, but the single folks I work with (none of them are from here either) are really disappointed with Reno's single scene. We've been here for almost three years due to work and my wife (also from WI) begs me daily to move out.
Maybe you can find work in Reno and commute from Tahoe?

Hi, We moved here from NYC a few months ago, Reno is a nice place to live but you will miss the east coast if you like the feel of a real neighborhood, fresh seafood, pizza, really good Italian and Chinese restaurants that are not overpriced for what is offered on the menu, at one place in an upscale mall in South Suburban Reno I was served what I would swear was a frozen chicken cutlet (based on uniform size, shape texture) with a dreadful thick sauce that was supposed to be a Marsala sauce for 17 dollars, luclily for this place the other diners eating similar fare seemed ok with their plates, this place would not last a week in NYC. The drivers here seem a bit rude even by the perceived NYC standard. Locals say to eat at the casinos for good food at good prices but the appeal of mass produced fare is lost on me.People on a personal level though seem very friendly at malls etc. but I have yet to meet my next door neighbor. The weather is outstanding. Lots of activities. Oh and San Fransisco is only a few hour drive.
