Job problems in Reno
I am wondering how many others are having problems finding work? Is there anyone out there with realistic professional advice?
I can submit my resume and hear nothing. I have calls from employment agencies that do not have any jobs, yet want me to come in and do testing. I need to invest my time and money wisely. Others have jobs but forget to forward my resume to the companies. Casino’s state they can’t hire me because I don’t have Casino experience.
I am experienced with all aspects of Customer Relations and Office Management. As a professional responsible individual I feel I would be an excellent addition.

I know this is over a week old now but I can understand your situation completely. My husband quit his upper management job recently and is now (due to lack of money) having to resort to a job he's very overqualified for. It seems like these companies put job postings up but would fail to get back to him. He got 2, maybe 3 callbacks and then no follow-up...not even to tell him to get lost. It's not just you.

Why did he quit his last job? Seems that one would only quit if they had something else lined up. I have a friend that moved to Carson City she was retired decided to go back to work part time, found a job immediatley. Now she is working full time for the Legislative office with a full benefit package, so I'm not quite understanding the job issues everybody has.
Perhaps you just need to sell yourself better and practice up on your interviewing skills, and never speak negatively about your past employers. No new employer wants an employee that is a whinner no matter what your skills are most will not hire a person who speaks badly about their previous work. I do all the hiring for our company and I can quarantee you they won't make it to a second interview with trashing others.

It's not a small problem among people who don't "sell' themselves well. Everyone I know that has relocated here has been dissapointed. I can't count how many people have left or are currently in the process of leaving. I have been here over a year and never found anything worth getting chilcare for, so I just stay home with my kid. Last year, after we signed a lease here, my husband was forced to commute 45min. into California to get a decent paying job when he couldn't get anything here. We're moving out of state soon and couldn't be more pleased about it.

He left for a variety of reasons, none of them being brought up in interviews or on his resume. I know he does have a hard time selling himself in interviews but he isn't even making it that far.

You don't know me, so this doesn't sway your statistics, but I relocated here for a new job in Reno about 1.5 years ago and I love it here (moved here from Colorado). No complaints so far, except that the golf courses are a little more expensive than I'm used to.

Sounds to me that most folks didn't do their homework prior to relocating, for me I won't need to find work but on one of my visits I decided to check it out. For me the pay would be about a third of what I currently make so unless I'm in dyer straits I won't work for that low of income, but if I had too you can bet I'm not too good for it.
Fortunately for me my employer will bring me back to Alaska to work for them in the summer months and doing that I will make in 3-4 months what I would make down there in a years time.

I don't know---every interview I've done, the first question they ask---is---"why did you leave that job"; especially if the job was good. But, being in upper management, he should have no problem seeking out his piers, and using the many contacts he made in upper management.

Actually it's kind of interesting. He heard back from two companies in the past few days. One said the job was no longer available because they were merging it into another position. The other one has abruptly moved their home office out of the Reno area. Is it that bad here that they can't afford to stay here?
