As far as the Soceity's Rebel he is only 22 years old does not have a child in school so don't really think he would be a good judge of the system.

Sorry just tired of people trashing the city, I have plenty of friends living there that are very happy.
I might not have a child in school but statistics don't lie... On the news they said that Nevada ranks 46th on k-12 spending per child! So its not just low test scores and rural schools that bring the ranks down, the state doesn't spend any money to improve the schools either and with $1 Billion defecit and Jim Gibbons as governor I wouldn't be surprised if Nevada slips even lower!

The state really does need to increase some taxes and invest more in schools... K-12 should be the last thing to ever have funds cut and the fact the Nevada ranks 46th in k-12 spending per child shows that the state has no regard for its school children!

Furthermore, Jim Gibbons seems to be the worst thing to happen to Nevada in recent times. What sitting governor divorces his wife half way through his first term? I bet the social conservatives won't be re-electing him in 2010!

Your right about Gibbons I haven't heard anything good about him, seems to me being on the outside looking in the Gov't is top heavy as usual. As far as stats go on the schools are they based on the test scores or per capita, seems they have a decent university there so why not concentrate on the kids too, here in Alaska they show that only 30 percent of the graduates will continue onto college.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've read in a while. No matter how much taxes are raised for schools, it'll never be enough for some people. Throwing more money at the public schools will not make them more effective at teaching the kids. The most effective thing would be competition in the form of vouchers.

Where do you get the "fact" that Nevada ranks 46th in K-12 spending? It may be true, but most of those "facts" you hear about in the news or read about in the papers aren't really close to being "facts".

It's opinions like yours that contribute to Nevada's low rankings to begin with!

Here is a quote from the Las Vegas Review Journal:

For the third consecutive year, Nevada dropped in nationwide rankings in per pupil spending on public education, according to a federal report released Tuesday. Continuing a trend that started in the 1998-99 school year, the state dropped to 46th in the country in per pupil spending in the 2000-01 school year, the most recent year for which data were available.

reviewjournal.com -- News: State rank in pupil spending falls

So according to the Review Journal, this is a trend and Nevada has consistently gotten worse over the last three years of data. And this is old data from the 2000-01 school year, so if the trend has been continuing then we're probably somewhere around 48th or 49th by now!

And him getting a divorce doesn't affect his job performance per se but it's something that's unheard of and many people will view it as unfavorable because of their Christian values. Personally, I could care less tho.

I thought he was a prick b4 the whole divorce thing. Even Gov. Guinn didn't like him and Guinn was an excellent governor who contributed a lot to Nevada!

Part of this is due to lack of funding. The state is currently facing a billion dollar deficit and the snazzy Republican governor would rather cut funding to education than raise a few taxes!
It has NOTHING to do with money and everything to do with the tools running the system. They waste money, so they should not get anymore until they can show some results. I was educated in a small town on a shoestring budget. Apparently the people running the NV schools need trillion of dollars to make little Billy read. Not buying it, sorry. The Teachers Unions do not help matters either. Most of the proposed tax increases will just go into their pockets anyway. "Promote mediocrity" is the war cry.

Schizrade, you're right. It nevers ends here. They will however, continue to get money. They bullied Guinn into a huge increase. Think what you want of Gibbons, but they are trying to bully him and he's standing his ground./

They shanghaied Guinn. They are finding it harder to so with Gibbons. Go back to California if you want bottomless budgets.

Smile Ohhhh all so negative!

Okay, let's be fair-
1- The Nevada school's are ranked 48th in the country because of what county is pulling it down? Clark County (Las Vegas). Northern Nevada is totally different academically and socially. Look up the Washoe County school district information.
2- I too have lived many places around the country (Hawaii, California, Lake Tahoe, North Shore Chicago, West County St. Louis, Gulf Coast, Reno). I have to admit the midwest schools are awesome and still offer art humanity programs and not just focus on core requirements. But there are certain school districts in Reno (yes, public schools) that are ranked high in the country ratings. Look it up on the net. One advise, since we have moved alot and have kids, ALWAYS buy or rent in the best school district.
3. Yes, the speed of life will be much faster here than in the midwest, but it is slower than California.
4. Most importantly- quality of life. ALOT of residents do not take advantage of all there is to do here. It is a four season adventure area (if you get out of your house and do it). There is hiking, biking, fishing, golf, boating, river rafting, kayaking, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, Lake Tahoe, Lake Pyramid, endless National Forest's and alpine lakes to adventure to and it goes on and on.
5. Probably a good time to buy here, so much inventory since the bubble burst.
6. Life is what YOU make it to be.
