1. The bus station is in one of the worse parts of town, but what bus station isn't? (And it's really not that bad. There are some seedy motels around the area, and a few boarded up bars, but I've been down there a number of times and walked around without fear.)
2. Not really any main grocery store here. We have Raley's, Save-mart (same as Albertson's), Safeway, and Wal-marts with grocery sections. The cheapest place to shop, though, is Win-co. There's one in the south and one in the north.
3. I don't think there are really any cheap extended stay hotels. The cheapest way would be to stay in a casino's hotel. The rates can drop down to around $35 a night. Of course, that leaves you without a kitchen, and you'd end up spending your first nights in casino-ville.
4. Bad parts of town-avoid the Spaghetti Bowl area-where 395 and I-80 intersect. It's probably one of the worst areas you can find in Reno. Old Sparks (find Sparks High on a map-and circle an area about a mile around it) and South East Reno have a fair amount of gang activity. The downtown casino area is icky. The river downtown area is much nicer.

The west, like another poster said, is the nice area of town. Also, anywhere outside the McCarran loop is nice.

You made the right choice. You'll love it here!
