Default Reno Economy

How is the Economy in Reno? I would like to move their but I am not sure if I can get a job. I'm 24, have a bachelors degree and work in Safety. I'm also single with no children. Currently I work for a government contractor in DC but have worked in a manufacturing environment in the past. I would like to move somewhere cheaper where theirs more to do outdoors. I make 53,000 and am struggleing here.

It's a mixed bag, in that some (mainly casino workers) complain about the level of pay, but unemployment is less than 5% and the area is growing so fields like healthcare, construction, etc. are booming.

With your background you should check out International Game Technologies (IGT). I believe they are the world's largest slot machine manufacturer and the sole fortune 500 company in Reno.

Reno also has divisions of Microsoft (Licensing headquarters) and Pfizer (Logistics Center) located in Reno, both of which are listed on the Fortune 500. I can't think of any others at the moment.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Sorry it took so long to reply but I forgot my password. The big reason I want to leave the DC/NOVA area is because of the high cost of living, traffic, crime and the fact that there is nothing to do that doesn't involve spending money. These things don't appear to be a problem in Reno.

I am originally from Western Pennsylvania but I lived in Boston for about a year after I graduated and loved it. I decided to move to DC/NOVA because I got a job offer that payed more money, I was going to be closer to my family and everyone told me how great the South was. Unfortunately the drive home is 6 hours one way and when I get there I'm usually to tired to do anything from the drive. Also when I compared the Boston cost of living to the DC cost of living I didn't realize that the information I had was from 2000 the cost of living for DC had gone through the roof since September 11th where as the Boston cost of living hadn't changed nearly as much. The DC area also has millions of illegals and I think that artificially brings down cost of living numbers. As a result I am now worst off then I was before.

I want to eventually return to PA but would like to move somewhere that has more to offer while I'm young. Is Reno a good place for that?

I would be interested in your opinion (others as well can chime in) on the comparison between Reno and Sacramento - as they are two of my three finalist cities in my relocation project (scheduled for October).

Thanks.

You might want to check out the tax's in California versus the other states you are thinkin of, it's my understanding with family members still living there that the taxes are quite high, possibly your pay may offset the taxes.

I did take some time to look at it - and while Nevada has no state income tax, it looks like the sales tax covers quite a lot. Also, from what I read, they tax the Blue Book value of vehicles being moved into the state to be registered. Is that true?
