There is not a town called Red Rock, it is an area of multiple acreage parcels north of Reno, you turn in near Silverlake. Animal Ark is out there, a cool animal rescue organization.

Very true but I had to throw it out there, sorry if I upset you, it was meant to be a joke.

You all seem to have got caught up in your own little "town" battle. I simply joined this forum in hope to receive very real information. 'Tressa' and 'Greatbasingguide' seem to dominate this forum. I (We) are truly in need of very poignant advice. Would love to hear more than the battle amongst the two of you, please.....

You seem to be having troubles communicating. I don't live in northern Nevada though I do know a little about it. Perhaps I can help.
The vast reaches of northern Nevada have no cities of any size. Schools are rare. "Good" schools outside of the Reno Tahoe area are non-existent. There simply is not the sort of infrastructure to support them.
The Reno Tahoe area is a very nice place. It however is not a nice version of Columbus, OH. It is for instance expensive. Houses cost more than anywhere else in the state and everything else is relatively expensive.
Tahoe is quite super. You need to be relatively well off. Reno, Minden, Gardnerville are less expenisve but you still need some bucks. Even Carson City ain't cheap. You can get out a ways to Fernley or Yerrington or such. But the schools are not going to be great and it is a trip for certain services.
Did that help any?

With due respect to olecapt as he is very savvy when it comes to Nevada you may not have noticed that he is from Las Vegas Nevada, even though he is very knowledgable concerning Nevada you will see the greatbasinguide is from the northern area and he too is very informed and can help you a great deal, and if you read back on the posting you will notice he was trying to assist with your question

I don't live in Reno, but visit it and the area often. Reno is "high desert" (about 4000 ft give or take) with warm summers in the 90's and cold winters with snow. The precip is low which is why it's a desert. Humidity is usually low. To the immediate west of Reno are the Sierra Nevada Mtns with peaks up to 10,000 or 11,000 ft. with opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, skiing, etc. I think Reno is a nice place to live and there are many nice neighborhoods in the area. It's on my top ten list for places to live in the US.

You want Poignant advice? Painful Piercing advice?
Well ok,, you won't like it. too dry, too dusty, too alkalai. too few people, you will get agoraphobia and stay in your car. The water will poison you, the Navy jets will drop bombs on you. The largest river in Nevada evaporates and never reaches the ocean, course that goes for most all the rivers except the Bruneau, Jarbidge and Owyhee.
Even the crows bring carry their own water

Thank you Olecapt and Humboldtrat for your information. Yes it is quite helpful. We are making this move in mid June and as a mother I am just looking for affirmation and I thank you again for providing it. As for the rest of you, my husband is a former Jarhead and knows quite well the taste of high deserts. It has been described to me in such a way that I know it is for me....So, see you soon in Nevada. Once more, any additional advice from anyone, either those with info or those with the desire to scare us away...any of it, much welcomed.
