OH MY gosh.... I cannot believe how many negative post there are about
Reno/Sparks!!!! I lived there for over four years and moved there from the suburbs of Dallas/Ft Worth Texas. I moved back to TX because I love it as well and my family is here.

I LOVED living in RENO!! It was absolutely beautiful. The mountains and Lake Tahoe. What more can you ask for?

YOU choose to do drugs or not no matter where you live. Stay away from them and they stay away from you.

The people were great and very friendly. The church I went to was very supportive with me being there by myself. I made many many friends that I will always remember.

WOO HOO FOR RENO!!!

what about the crime rate? I heard from my friend that crime is pretty ubiquitous over there. Also, where should I go if I want to make new acquaintances or look for some girls? Are there like regular spots.

I've lived in the Reno-Tahoe area for over 30 years, and in the city of Reno for the last 16 years.
Re crime, most areas are safe. However, there are a few areas to avoid: the Neil Road area, Northeast Reno, Sun Valley, and the some of the areas immediately to the west of downtown Reno. Good luck.

Smile I like it here

Hey there Henry,
I moved here from Southern California almost a year ago. I moved here from the city of Vista to be exact. I had come up here three times before i moved to visit family and it was always fun. If you enjoy the outdoors Reno/Northern Nevada is the place for you. Compared to southern california i really like it here. I do miss the beach but its not ridiculously far (about 3 hrs) and we do have Lake Tahoe. Being a small town there is great family owned restaurants and great food at the Casinos. We have two malls and a third is being built (all within fifteen miles of each other )I'm sure that'll be a plus for your wife.
Wind, im not sure where those two locations you are talking about are located (sorry ) but i lived up at the North Valleys Red Rock to be exact (where you get the harshest weather) this winter and it wasnt intolerable. It gets pretty loud but its not like you cant sleep at night or like its tearing down your house. It gets annoying but thats about it.
Overall i like living in Reno. It is a small down, friendly people, no traffic at all compared to CA. No income tax but keep in mind that Nevada doesnt have as many government funded things as California. I've run into that a lot.
Now about it being a good town to raise children. I think it kind of depends on the parents but im inclined to say no. I know tons of teens here that are failing school, smoking and having sex at age 14 and to me thats not okay. I think the party feeling that Reno gives off tends to make kids irresponsible. Of course it all depends on your morals, ethics and where they go to school. Can't really give you details on what schools are good since i dont have kids.
From visiting three times, and living here 11 months i havent run into any drug problems but then again im not a big partier or out at night all the time.
Overall i like it here. Its not as green as California but it is cheaper, and less crowded. If you are huge tree lovers i recommend moving into an older part of town where they tend to have the older bigger trees.
Hope i gave you enough info
Feel free to get ahold of me if you have anymore questions or if you need anything when youre here Good luck to you and your family!

mod cut: Reno is a pretty good sized town with tons of offerings in shopping and commerce, there is some traffic but not LA traffic, it's a great CITY not SMALL TOWN and getting bigger by the years. Enjoy

We've been looking around the Sommerset area for a future home. I grew up in the desert and love the views here. We have seen several houses here with great views but worry some of them will lose the view when trees mature. How many stories does the average tree grow to in the Reno area?

Different tree species grow to different heights. The Reno climate generally doesn't limit tree height as long as the homeowner waters his trees. ID the trees in question and either Google them or visit a local garden nursery and ask. I wouldn't plant any tree in the Sommerset area that could grow very tall because the high winds that occur there could blow them over or eventually give them a flag tree/Krummholz type effect depending on how exposed they are. Hopefully those who landscape Sommerset know better than to plant really tall trees or those susceptable to the 'flag effect'. However, trees are trees...they aren't going to end up to be just large bushes...most folks underestimate how big trees grow and many also plant them too close to their homes. You could always trim trees on your property but it's unrealistic to expect a neighbor to someday 'top' their trees because you want to keep your 'view'. There are a LOT of houses on the market in the Reno area now, including Sommerset. Be patient, find the house with that perfect and forever unobstructed view you want.

Hello, some questions for you folks. 1. Would you say that Reno is a good sports town? In terms of supporting its own and having passionate sports fans as a whole. 2. Is there good fishing anywhere near Reno? 3. Would you consider Reno a growing town with a mix of new fresh minds or old style conservatism? 4. Is the town and the surrounding areas relatively safe?

Hello, some questions for you folks.
1. Would you say that Reno is a good sports town? In terms of supporting its own and having passionate sports fans as a whole.
Minor league ball team, UNR football is nearly a religion, the bowling stadium If your sports include a ball, lines and rules, lots going on, adult sport leagues, youth sport leagues.
2. Is there good fishing anywhere near Reno?
Cuthroat trout at Pyramid, Kokanee Salmon at Stampede and Tahoe, flyfishing the Truckee, spearing carp, fishing is ok.

3. Would you consider Reno a growing town with a mix of new fresh minds or old style conservatism?
Yep
4. Is the town and the surrounding areas relatively safe?

Safe? aside from the zombie swarms from Fernley, Reno is safe, as safe as any town.

Haha, I definitely wouldn't call Reno a good sports town. Very fair-weathery and Nevada football gets very weak support considering everything.

But there's plenty of options with UNR sports, and minor league.
