Hi out there. My husband and I are talking about moving to the Gardnerville/Minden area for a job opportunity that has come up. We have 2 kids, ages 3 and 1, and are interested in what the area has to offer for children/moms/support. Is there a Parks and Rec Dept? Child classes? Moms' groups? Lots of parks? Playgroups? Etc? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated! I am a stay at home mom and LOVE my job, it's just a bit daunting to think of displacing our family with 2 young kids... Thanks so much for your input/ideas!

I live about 5 minutes north, in Carson City. There are tons of parks. There are a few child classes, dance, yoga, gymnastics and more. The Carson library has story time Wednesday and Thursday mornings, I'm not sure when they do that at the Douglas County library. There was a local moms group, but I think it fell apart during the summer, a lot of the kids were getting older and going to school. If you are willing to drive there is even more in Reno. My daughter is 3, so let me know how the move goes.

Default thanks

Thanks SandraB. We are still in the process of applying for the job and looking into housing opportunities... The job is actually out at Pickle Meadows (The Marine Corp Mountain Warfare Training Center)... any input on the towns from there, along 395, to Minden? Like I said we have 2 kids...

Why not live at Base housing? There are towns, Coleville, Walker, Bridgeport, They are small but great places for kids, fishing, horses, bicycles, Dirt Bikes, hiking, camping, hunting, skiing, rock climbing, and probably a little soccer.
You would be living in the some of the best land god put on the planet. There is nothing you can do for your children better than raising them in wild country.

Don't be a stay at home mom, be a get in the truck and let's go do stuff mom. You are being given a rare opportunity, don't blow it and live in some town where your kids will grow up thinking a shopping mall is cool.
Right outside Bridgeport http://www.redwoodmotel.net/images/LowTwinLk.jpg

One half hour away;

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. We have heard of those towns, but as things get closer we'll have to spend some time and look into the towns you mentioned. Any specifics you can tell me about the towns?

Towns are just places to buy groceries. I try to stay out of them, I raised my kids in the woods, far from town with horses, llamas, dogs, cats, bikes, sno mos skis. They all turned out fine.

"Any specifics" is too broad, the towns are very small. Any specific questions I will try to answer, in my own imitable way.

I am also a mom looking at the possibility of living in Minden. We live in Oregon right now in a very small town and are thinking of moving to Minden to be closer to family (who live in Tahoe, but Tahoe is much too expensive and full of more higher-class folk than we like).

Any suggestions about moms' groups, activities, cost of living, where are the jobs, where do you do most of your shopping, is the heat really bad and is the wind as bad as it seems??

You would have more to do in Carson City, more affordable and move convenient.
