hello,
ill be relocating from Oklahoma city to reno...mapquest and google maps both say the fastest route to go is I-40 then drive up north through las vegas. my question is what is the best route if travelling with a baby..b/c it just seems there isnt ANYTHING inbetween las vegas and reno in terms of restaurants or places to stop..please correct me if im wrong. i was thinkin of going the northern route up through witchita then hit I-70 west..but it seems its a no win situation in terms of populated spots at some time of each of the routes. what it comes down to is does the southern route through I-40 and vegas have more spots to stop at than what im thinking? and is the drive through the desert that dangerous? we have a reliable car so im not worried about that portion. sorry for the ignorance in this matter and thanks for the help!

I recently wrote this for the same question you are asking. You can drive from Vegas to Reno in one full day on Hwy 95. It isn't totally desolate. If you want to break up this leg of the trip into 2 parts, you can stay in Tonopah. I have stayed at the Tonopah Station (sort of looks like a train station) which has in-house restaurant, coffee shop and casino. It's a nice place. Be sure to leave Vegas with a full tank of gas!

You are not likely to have any real problems on that stretch. From Vegas you go to Beatty to Goldfield to Tonapah to Hawthorne to Fallon or Yerrington. And there are small towns between these. Virtually any will get you fed and the others all have a Casino and a Motel.

It is actually less desolate than the Interstates you got to Vegas on...

For desert travel: In the desert it is always wise to be prepared for the worst, even though it may never happen. At the least ALWAYS carry two gallons of water person per day and maybe some gatorade. Not a problem as you can always use it when you arrive. Also some sort of high energy food such as dried fruit, raisons, perhaps and granola bars, small firstaid kit, whistle, signal mirror or some sort of reflective surface, maps and a small compass. Carrying a folding knife can be very handy as well. Also in the desert your throat tends to get very dry, so gum is good to have as well.
Also, always start with a full tank of gas, you never know if there will be a detour or the anticipated gas station is closed or you get lost.
