We will be visiting Reno in June to bowl at the National Bowling Stadium. We have been to Reno several times in the past and have always stayed at Harrahs or Silver Legacy. This year we would like to stay off the strip and see more of Reno. My question is what are some nice hotels around Reno that are away from the strip?? Also, what are some good places to eat. Thanks....

You might check out John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks, about a five-minute drive from downtown. A very nice facility and quite a few activities/restaurants in Victorian Square, which the Nugget faces. I love the Great Basin Brewery, a brew pub right across the street from the Nugget.

Also, there is the Grand Sierra Resort about a mile east of downtown Reno, a full-service hotel and casino with many shops and restaurants.

If you want a place that is sort of out of the way but close to everything, try the Grand Sierra Resort (former Reno Hilton).

In general, you can't go wrong at any of the properties mentioned upthread as long as you avoid some of the older cheaper rooms at the Nugget, Peppermill, or Atlantis which are subpar compared to the other rooms.

Since I have a furlough week next month, I will be trying out several properties including the Eldorado, the Grand Sierra Resort, Circus Circus, and one other property to be determined later.

If you look at Lastminutetravel.com, they have an "opaque" product offering some great rates. However, anyone even reasonably familiar with the properties will be able to determine which hotel is being offered.
