greatbasinguide,

Can you suggest any particular Elko area? You mentioned the Jarbidge area-to visit or live? What do you think about Spring Creek? I plan on taking a trip soon to check it out. I am ashamed to say that as a Native Nevadan I have never been farther north or east of the Reno. Pathetic, I know. It's time to check out my own backyard.

You are not unusual in that you are a native who does not know their state. To most people in Reno, Nevada is as unknown as Tibet. I do not know the town of Elko well enough to say where to live. Spring Creek is out in the sage brush, a bit more rural looking lots of manufactured homes. Elko is a standard town with standard neighborhoods. Lots of services in Elko. Winters are milder than the higher elevations to the north. Where you live depends in part on what you want to do.

I would try to live in Lamoiille.

When you head out there, take a drive up Lamoille Canyon, it will knock your socks off.

A few years ago I hiked out of Lamoille canyon to a high lake, still frozen on July 15.

gbg,

Thanks for the info on the Elko area. I will take your advice and drive the Lamoille Canyon.

BTW-Congrats on the retirement! I am soooo jealous! As one teacher to another, I hear you about NCLB.

It is pretty sad what has happened to education. Another teacher I work with, a woman, plans to get her commercial drivers license and drive dump truck instead of teaching, and she has over 16 years in.

My wife grew up in Elko, her older sister's second grade teacher was my Principal in Reno in 1990. My wife also taught in Ruby Valley, a two room school house, being a young blonde she was courted by the local ranchers. Very honorable and courteous young men, but, she needed to try the bright lights of Reno.

We will build a summer place near Austin, wish we had land about 50 miles north of Elko, The Jarbidge Range is one of the most scenic places on the planet.

Lamoille Canyon blew me away the first time I drove up it. It is much like Yosemite Valley, huge cliffs, water falls, spectacular.

Oh no, you have an incorrect concept of Spring Creek!! We have many beautiful stick built homes on several acres of land. There is a mobile home section, that is separate from the housing section. Sage brush, yes, but at the foot of the Ruby Mountains....absolutely gorgeous!!! We have had a problem with ATV/motocross in the area. The problem is the noise from them. The Spring Creek Association has covenants against ATV/mc tracks in the association as well as nuisance/noise regs. Spring Creek was established as a rural, quiet, peaceful, agricultural area that is simply beautiful. I am not a chamber of commerce or even a realtor. I am just a resident who enjoys the life and will fight to keep it this way!!

Was the problem with ATV/Motocross in the area prior to homes being built there? We have numerous trails up by our place too.

Spring Creek was established in the mid '70s as strictly a residential, agricultural area. The open/common areas were/are explicitly forbidden for ATV/mc use. While I wasn't here back then, I don't think that any recreational ATV use had begun. While there have been problems in the past, it has really accelerated in the last couple of years mostly because of a board and manager who seemed to turn a blind eye to ATV violations. This has been brought home to them in a jolt by recent elections of board members who vow to keep Spring Creek quiet and rural. Also public opinion polls that the "leaders" hoped would back their efforts for commercialization and the open use of ATV OHV, went strongly against them.
