One day I made it from Donner Lake to the emergency room at renown in 26 minutes. It is all doable. I commuted to Reno 5 days a week, for 25 years, from my home in the hills 10 miles north of Truckee.

Clark wrote, " Paying the little bit extra to live in the forested mountains and to be close to skiing was well worth it to us."

That is a clear answer to my question! I used to live in Rehoboth Beach DE, Manchester Village VT and Fairfield PA (off Ski Liberty and Gettysburg).

Thanks for all of your advices.

Default Commuting

Just be aware, it's a 30-40 minute commute when it's not snowing. I'd live near your job and commute to skiing. JMHO. Good luck!

Yeah... the way to go is live in the Northwest area (I'm including Verdi and Mogul in on that, but likely you'll have to move about 3 mins farther into NV then you wanted to really find a rental you're looking for)

Verdi is not really a rental place... It's essentially high end homes - with a few lower end properties in specific areas. It's in my opinion underdeveloped for its seemingly ideal location.

Mogul is a classic apple pie esque family community... and then Northwest right next to both... you find some rental areas.

The drive to the slopes is not bad from there... you can do it in 30 mins to Northstar without a problem if the "Border patrol" allows you the "privlage" of entering California in a timely manner.

The 80 is normally the first major highway cleared in the area... and overall has more reliability then going into tahoe via mount rose highway (in southern reno) or driving through carson up to south lake via the 50). The former usually has the most snow - on the curviest road - the later gets rocked by windstorms and is a longer drive.

In Northwest you are about 45 mins away from about 8 different ski resorts.

Thanks to KevinJPPark.

I had a job interview four days ago and am waiting for a result. The professional job is located in Sparks while I like to have a second job - funemployment in the Tahoe area.
