I am looking to move to Reno from Fallon in hopes of finding a job in Reno because my current employer is going out of business because of the economy. In three of the homes that I have looked at there has been evidence of squatters including trash, sleeping bags and feces. These homes were in D' Andrea, University Ridge and Damonte Ranch. I was wondering if these are just bad areas or is this common throughout Reno. I gives me an unsafe feeling! Thanks for your help.

Actually the Damonte Ranch and Double Diamond areas are very good areas...I have lived in this area for 3.5 years and have no problems with crime or vandalism...must be a landlord that does not check their properties...go with a reputable property management co and keep looking in this area.

Default For D'Andrea Yes

I haved lived in D'Andrea and a house next to me was occupied by squatters. We had to call the police to remove them. They graffitied the entire proterty and much of the neighborhood. Within the past six months there had been about four people living out of shopping carts in the D' Andrea Safeway shopping center.

I live in an upscale development in the Southwest part of Reno. We have about 50 homes in the development and everyone seems to keep an eye on the empty properties. We have not had any problems with squatters however we have noticed an increase in theft from cars parked on driveways and on the streets. Regardless of where you live, it is recommended you keep things out of sight.

University Ridge is a very quiet area, its up on a big hill so I don't see the allure for squatters to walk to the top of it. I haven't seen any evidence of anything other than regular folks on UR, very clean/quiet area.

Carson is nice if you want the 'country life' as theres not a whole lot of anything there. Its also a matter of perspective, Reno is far from a ****hole, IMO. Look to SF for my definition of ****hole.

Downtown Reno is kinda eh since its just that casino/bar scene, but the rest of the place feels just like anywhere else USA.

Squatters are an issue city wide at the moment. Obviously certain communities are struggling with it more, but the reality is... Nevada is just about the best example of the financial meltdown going on in our country - squatters are just one byproduct of this.

That being said... I love living here. It's the best state and city I've ever lived in... but I understand those who don't like it in the same breath.
