Hey board,

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice on the first apartment post.

Well somebody broke into my apartment and took my tv. To make a long story short, I have no receipt for this tv. It was a gift from a friend of a friend, and of course that friend got it as a gift 4 years ago. Its an older model tv (still flat screen though) but no receipt. Claim adjuster said she needs a receipt to cut a check. I have no receipt. I can't afford a tv right now, and want them to pay for it. Thats what I pay renters insurance for. Any advice?

Correct me if I am wrong, I doubt they will pay for a new TV

The TV cost you nothing, nor did it cost anybody you know personally anything. Therefore your loss was zero.

I bought my TV new about 3 years ago and I definitely do not have the receipt anymore. I would be upset if I paid for insurance to not be reimbursed.

I didn't make myself clear. I apologize. I guess I made the story to short. I did pay for the TV when I got it. My point was that I don't have the receipt. It was not just giving to me. No the TV was not the only thing they stole. DVD player and game console. I have receipts for the game console and DVD.

Did you buy it on a credit/debit card? Maybe try calling the place where you bought it and see if they can print off a receipt if you can provide some sort of transaction number.

is the adjustor asking for the receipt to prove you had the tv or are they looking for the receipt to have a cost basis of the original cost?

If it was a friend who sold it to you, get a receipt.

That's exactly why I don't have insurance. Because my receipts are all over the place and I know I need to have them to expect reimbursement.
