When I purchased my house I did the same as an earlier poster. I just explained to the seller's that they would have to pay some closing costs to cover the cost of breaking the lease. They did and I bought my house.
All you need to do is offer some money to someone on craiglist and have the lease people put their name on the lease. Then you take your name off. Simply as that! The apartment people will talk junk to you because they want a cut of having a new resident come in, etc. It works as we had to do it to get out of one our leases before.

I get your gist, but this is not as simple as it sounds. The new people you "find" on craigslist have to be approved by the landlord and apply for the property. It's not just as simple as finding some random person and swapping their name with yours on the lease. The landlord needs assurance that the person is qualified to rent.
I know people who simply moved out, returned keys, forfeited their security deposit and that's it. Depending on the amount you still owe there is not much a landlord may be willing to do. .
That's risky for anyone buying a house and moving out. It's very easy for the landlord to get a judgement and place a lien on the new house. If you own a house, you are no longer "uncollectible"
When we bought our house we just explained to the seller's that we were interested but they would have to pay some closing costs to cover the cost of breaking the lease. They did and we had a deal! It worked out for us.
Great Idea!
