Technically, you are the stranger. The room belongs to the landlord. I guess you could check tax records to make sure they actually own it. I would love to be there when you ask the owner for his social security number and driver's license, so you can do a criminal background check. If rooms are hard to come by, you might re-think asking for that.

Technically the statement in the OP is correct. Since the OP doesn't know the roommate, he or she is a stranger. And you do not need a social security number or drivers license number to do a criminal background check. Arrest records are public record.

To the OP: I don't know what to tell you. You should ask for whatever you need to feel comfortable. Your landlord or whoever is subleasing to you offense is less important than your safety. With that said you are in a tough spot. If I was a roommate with someone I didn't know I would sleep with a weapon nearby.

I specifically asked anyone I was renting a room from if they were on probation or parole since I would place my own personal property at risk of warrantless searches. I value my privacy and solitude.

Some were offended, some were confused and the person I ended up moving in with understood perfectly and answered honestly. If I were to be the renting out a room, I would most definitely be doing a criminal background check.
