I've been tying to find a place to rent, but its either too expensive, they don't take pets, or take pets 25lbs or under. My dog is OB trained and has CGC.

I've called and looked at so many rental properties but its all the same.
I'm trying to find a place for $600 or less a month but I am having no such luck. I'm just looking for something to start off with 1 bedroom or studio apartment. I live in the Hampton Roads, VA vicinity.

Craigslist has so many spammers its crazy. Doing the roommate thing haphazard at best.

What did some of you do after graduating to find a place to rent?

Look at local newspapers. Generally found near bus stops and supermarkets.

Learn to discern and ignore Craigslist spammers. Craigslist is how I find most of my tenants, so its gotta be working for most people.

Are you sure your local rental market will support a pet-friendly single apartment for $600??? That seems awfully cheap. Make sure you know what the base rate of rent is in your area, and plan accordingly.

Another option for you, would be to find a nice apartment that you like, then find your own roommate to cover the extra cost.

If the neighborhood is walkable, just walk around looking for a building you like, if they have vacancies, a sign will frequently be posted.

As far as Craigslist, use Apartments for Rent - PadMapper Apartment Search for Oodle, Apartments.com, Kijiji, and Craigslist Apartments or similar. Not only will it browse several sites, including Craigslist, and put it in a map format which allows better selection, an additional benefit for you is most of the scams will not show as they do not provide addresses.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Yes I know $600 a month is cheap but I did mention I am a recent graduate, I make about 1600 and 1700 a month. I wouldn't even mind a maids quarters. Just something to get started with.

I'd advise either increasing your budget or finding a new (temporary) home for the dog. Or getting a second job.

Where are you located? It really depends on the rental market in your area. I know where I am in S Florida, you won't have a problem finding a rental that fits your needs. The only problem would be if you really wanted to live where you can find such cheap rentals.

then you're going to have to either raise your budget, increase your income or lower your standards.

I agree 100% I do have another job but it hasn't been consistent lately. So I'm in the works of finding another part time job. Lowering standards is not in option I want to increase.

lol Understandable. But, you can only afford what you can afford. Don't put yourself in a situation where you'll end up breaking a lease or getting kicked out for non payment. kwim?
