Having a signed lease almost two months before the move in date? I guess i was thinking that I wouldn't sign the lease until all the money was submitted that was required to move in and just wanted to know does this happen sometimes? It does state on the lease the amount that is due before the move in date but I guess since It was so many weeks before the move in date I was shocked a little.

Signed the lease on 4/5 and the move in date is 6/1 but I will have the keys around Mid-May I believe.

My step mother had to do the same thing in Minnesota. She signed the lease at the end of May and paid money and moved in August 1st. I suppose they don't want the place empty between tenants so are making sure they have tenants lined up.

Everything is dependent on what your lease states, what your landlord says in context and providing that your lease doesn't contradict your state landlord tenant laws (which you should read if you haven't yet done so). Most landlords require that everything is paid before keys change hands but if your landlord decides to give you access to the apartment prior to your official move-in date that's his prerogative. Read your lease.

It's the same thing when you rent a hotel. They want a deposit to hold your place.

yeah because the guy was like......."I can't hold the apt". So i made sure I gave him the deposit right away because that place is in a very safe and attractive neighborhood.

I think it is the norm in some places more so than others.

I have never done this in my current city. It's a large city (close to 2 million), lots of choices for renters. I am moving to a different city this summer, much smaller (50k population) and a college town. Many rentals offer "pre-leasing" that works this way, where you pay early and sign the lease early to know for sure no one else can rent a place even though it won't be available for move in for a while down the road.

If you're uncomfortable about something important ask the question before doing it. You should have taken a few days to read thru it (or asked someone you trust to do it for you) very thoroughly.

Is it currently occupied? If no, have all repair and maintenance issues already been addressed?

Yes it's occupied until Mid-may and was just wondering was leases given out this early. Based on the last time I signed a lease I thought they didn't give it to you until 3 weeks before your move in date.

Is it normal for landlord to require security deposit to "hold" an apartment before signing lease?
Look at Squirl's response.
